Minimize How to obtain SMOS data

In accordance with ESA Earth Observation Data Policy, SMOS Level 1 and Level 2 Science data products are accessible on-line to all users, free of charge.

How to access SMOS data

The SMOS Online Data Access is implemented via the SMOS Online Dissemination Service.

The available Science data products are organised by collections. Products can be openly searched and browsed, following the guidelines described in the help page.

In order to download products, either via HTTP or FTP, please login with your ESA EO-SSO account or follow the instructions for creating one beforehand.

In case of any problems, doubts or questions, please contact the ESA EO Helpdesk.

SMOS Level 1 and Level 2 Data Products

  • Level 1 and Level 2 Science Data Products
This includes the complete Level 1B/1C and Level 2 SM/OS datasets, i.e. all the operational and reprocessed products generated with the latest operational version of the processors by the SMOS DPGS at ESAC.
  • Near Real Time Data Products
This includes the Level 1 Brightness Temperature "Light" product (in BUFR format) and the Level 2 Soil Moisture product generated using a Neural Network algorithm (in netCDF format), distributed by the SMOS DPGS in NRT, i.e. respectively within 3 and 4 hours from sensing.

A detailed description of the SMOS Science data products, including read-me-first notes, Algorithm Theoretical Baseline Documents, Product Format Specifications and relevant Data Quality Reports, etc. can be found here.

Note to NRT Data users:
NRT L1 "Light" BUFR and L2 SM Neural Network products are also accessible via the following routes:

  • EUMETCast Europe Service (DVB), after registration on the EUMETSAT Earth Observation Portal
  • WMO Global Telecommunication System (GTS), upon authorization of the SMOS Mission Management.

SMOS Level 3 and Level 4 Data Products

For higher-level Sea Surface Salinity and Soil Moisture data products users must refer to the national French and Spanish processing entities: Centre Aval de Traitement des DonnĂ©es SMOS (CATDS) and SMOS CP34.

Level 3C Sea Ice thickness maps are produced by the Integrated Climate Data Center (ICDC), and they are also available via the SMOS Online Dissemination Service.

The access and use of SMOS products are regulated by the ESA's Data Policy and subject to the acceptance of the specific Terms & Conditions.

Users accessing SMOS products are intrinsically acknowledging and accepting the above.
