Minimize How to obtain SMOS data

SMOS Science Data

SMOS NRT and operational Science Data products are freely available to ESA registered users via a dedicated SMOS Online Dissemination Service. To be enabled to download the available products, please Apply for SMOS Science Data as described below.

Those users not having an ESA EO-SSO account should follow the instructions for creating one beforehand.

  • Level 1 and Level 2 Science Data Products
This includes the complete Level 1B/1C and Level 2 SM/OS dataset v6, i.e. all the operational and reprocessed science products generated with the latest operational version of the processors (v6xx). This version is running on the SMOS Data Processing Ground Segment since May 2015.
  • Near Real Time Data Products
This includes the NRT Level 1 Brightness Temperature "Light" product (in BUFR format) and the NRT Level 2 Soil Moisture product generated using a Neural Network algorithm (in netCDF format), distributed within 3 and 4 hours from sensing respectively.

A detailed description of the Science data products, including read-me-first notes, Algorithm Theoretical Baseline Documents, Product Specification Documents and Data Quality Reports, etc., can be found here.

You can search for and browse all products openly, but you must be registered in order to download files from the ESA SMOS Online Dissemination Service. In order to register using your own EO-SSO account, please proceed as follows:

  • Login with your EO-SSO account into the "My Earthnet" section at the top of this page
  • Click "Add ESA products", add "SMOS Science data products", accept both "Terms&Conditions" and finally click on the "Save" button to complete the registration process.

Products can be accessed and downloaded either via HTTP or FTP/FTPES, following the guidelines described here.

Download of files will be enabled within 2 days of registration. You will be notified by EOHelp.

Note to NRT Data users:
You can also access the L1 "NRT Light" BUFR and the NRT L2 SM NN (from April onwards) via the following routes:

  • EUMETCast Europe Service: access to ESA registered users will be granted by the EUMETSAT User Service Helpdesk, after registration on the EUMETSAT Earth Observation Portal.
  • WMO GTS: please send a request to the SMOS Mission Manager for authorisation.

SMOS Level 3 and Level 4 Data Products

For higher-level Sea Surface Salinity and Soil Moisture data products please refer to the national French and Spanish processing entities: Centre Aval de Traitement des Données SMOS (CATDS) and SMOS CP34.

Level 3C Sea Ice thickness maps produced by the Integrated Climate Data Center (ICDC) are also available on the SMOS Online Dissemination Service.
