Pyeongchang, South Korea
2018 Winter Olympics
This 300 m false-colour scene of Pyeongchang in South Korea was captured by Proba-V on 21 January 2018, just two weeks before the Winter Olympics 2018. It shows the northern part of the country, highlighting the mountains as a white network against the red tones of the vegetation.
With the 2018 edition of the Winter Olympic Games and Winter Paralympics, South Korea hosts its second Olympics after the Summer Games of Seoul hosted back in 1988.
In late October, the Olympic torch set off on its journey from Greece, reaching South Korea on 01 November 2017. There, it was relayed by 7,500 torchbearers, representing the country's 75 million population, to reach the opening ceremony on 09 February 2018. By adding four new disciplines, this international event will involve the first Winter Games to extend over 100 medals spread across 15 sports.
