In readiness for launch on 8 April, ESA's CryoSat-2 ice satellite has now joined the rest of the Dnepr rocket in the launch silo at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

For the launch of the CryoSat-2 satellite, scheduled for Thursday 8 April at 15:57 CEST, representatives of the press are invited to watch the event live from ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany.

The technical issue with the second stage of the Dnepr rocket that delayed the launch of ESA's Earth Explorer CryoSat-2 satellite in February has now been resolved - and the new launch date of 8 April has been set.

ESA's CryoSat ice mission has completed its Flight Acceptance Review, confirming that all the mission components are ready for launch, which is planned for 25 February 2010 from Baikonur.

An Earth observation mission does not just involve the building of a satellite, it also includes the all-important infrastructure to control the satellite and handle the data - the ground segment. As ESA prepares for the launch of the CryoSat mission at the end of the year, its associated ground segment is now ready.
