A new Geographical mask is in place since week 51 (14 December 2015). The mask is the basis of the CryoSat mission planning and defines the mode switching of the SIRAL instrument while the satellite revolves around the Earth.

This new map takes into consideration the increasing vast interest of the CryoSat community to different areas of research beyond the original mission goals. In particular this time, hydrology and coastal oceanography. With respect to the previous version 3.6, the main 3.7 changes are:

  • New SARin mask over the Danube Basin
  • New SARin mask over the Amazon Basin
  • New SARin mask over the Guapore River
  • New SARin mask over the Garonne River (switch from SAR to SARin)
  • New SARin mask over the Alps (covering the whole Leman Lake)
  • New SARin mask over the Qinghai Lake and Bramaputra region
  • New SARin mask over a large portion of the Greece coastal areas
  • New SARin mask over Bohai Sea (China)
  • New SAR mask over the Mediterranean Sea (now extended to the Eastern basin)
  • New SAR mask over the Vänern lake
  • New SAR mask over the Harvest platform in California
  • New SAR mask over the Tana Lake
  • Previous SAR and SARin areas have been disabled in order to allow these mask changes
