ESA intends to reprocess the magnetic L1b Swarm data

25 June 2014

From 16 until 18 June 2014 the third Cal/Val meeting took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. Scientific experts from all over the world presented their latest findings on the scientific quality of the Swarm data and proposed ways to improve the value of the data even further.

Besides plenary sessions, dedicated splinter sessions for the different instruments were held during the three days. One of the recommendations from the cal/val team members was to update the Euler angles defining the rotation between the spacecraft reference frame and the magnetometer reference frame. Such an update (including a re-processing of all available L1b data products), is of major importance for the next update of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) later this year. The scientific community expects a significant increase of the quality of this reference field by including Swarm data.

ESA intends to start a full reprocessing of the data products in the coming days. A news item will be published here, as soon as the processing is finalised.
