ESA's Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) mission will orbit in tandem with one of the Copernicus constellation satellites. Taking advantage of Sentinel-3's optical and thermal sensors will lead to an integrated package of measurements to assess plant health. With the Sentinel-2 satellites also in orbit, there is a unique opportunity of using this data synergistically from all three missions for vegetation studies.

Launched in February 2016 with a suite of cutting-edge instruments, Sentinel-3A is arguably the most comprehensive of all the Copernicus Sentinel missions. Since then, the satellite has been thoroughly tested and fine-tuned. This led to the release of its first Earth colour data in October and first radiometer data last month. Now, the public also have access to data from its radar altimeter.

A cloud-based web service that allows non-expert users to browse, process and distribute large amounts of Earth observation data takes home this year's Copernicus Masters grand prize.
20 October 2016
Today, the Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite has taken another step towards being fully 'operational' as the first data from its Ocean and Land Colour Instrument are made available to monitor the health of our planet.

This image from Copernicus Sentinel-3A shows the temperature at the top of Hurricane Matthew at 03:13 GMT (05:13 CEST) on 07 October 2016, as it approached Florida in the USA.
Sentinel-3's sea and land surface temperature radiometer measures energy radiating from Earth's surface in nine spectral bands. This is a thermal infrared image at a resolution of 1 km.

An app that uses satellite data to evaluate the quality of wine took home the top prize at this year's Space App Camp at ESA's centre in Frascati, Italy.
13 September 2016
ESA and Enterprise Estonia have signed an arrangement that gives one of ESA's newest Member States access to data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites.
13 July 2016
Getting the bigger picture on the health of our planet drew another step closer today as Europe's Sentinel-3A satellite was handed over to EUMETSAT for operations.
Estonia has been awarded its first contract since becoming an ESA Member State in 2015. Over the next three years, scientists from Estonia's Tartu Observatory will head an international team to ensure that Sentinel-3's measurements of ocean colour are of the highest quality possible.

Wildfires have been raging in Canada's Alberta province for nearly three weeks, causing widespread destruction and forcing thousands of people from their homes. As the blaze grows and shifts, satellites are tracking its movement.
06 April 2016
Despite only being in orbit a matter of weeks, Sentinel-3A has already delivered some impressive first images. With the thermal-infrared channels now turned on, the satellite completes its set of firsts with a view of ocean features off the coast of Namibia.
31 March 2016
ESA and Australia's national geological survey, Geoscience Australia, today agreed to cooperate to ensure data from the EU's Sentinel satellites are accessible in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.
15 March 2016
ESA has agreed with NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Geological Survey (USGS) to make data available to them from the European Sentinel satellites.
08 March 2016
The three instruments on the Sentinel-3A satellite are now offering a tantalising glimpse of what's in store for Europe's Copernicus environmental monitoring effort. The latest images, which feature Europe and Antarctica, come from the sensor that records Earth's radiant energy.
04 March 2016
Following the first impressive images from Sentinel-3A, this latest Copernicus satellite is now showing us how another of its instruments, an altimeter, will track sea-level change.
02 March 2016
Just two weeks after launch, the latest Sentinel satellite has offered a taster of what it will provide for the EU's Copernicus programme.
25 February 2016
Each year, about a quarter of the carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere ends up in the ocean, but how it happens is still not fully understood. The Sentinel-3A satellite is poised to play an important role in shedding new light on this exchange.
