Greenland wildfire

10 August 2017

Greenland is usually associated with ice and snow, but the country has fallen victim to a large wildfire that has been raging since the end of July. The fire was imaged by the Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite on 8 August 2017. The satellite carries a high-resolution multispectral camera working in 13 wavelength bands. The animation uses different combinations of these bands to show the fire in natural colour, to highlight the flames and to show the burnt areas.

Deforestation in Rio Branco, Brazil

This Proba-V 100m false-colour image of 03 August 2016 shows Rio Branco, a city in western Brazil. Deforested areas appear as a fishbone pattern in grey-blue, with the distinct southern edge forming the Brazilian-Bolivian border.

Can Gio mangrove forest, Vietnam

To mark the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem on 26 July, this Proba-V image features the Can Gio mangrove forest in Vietnam. Visible in dark red in the centre of the image, this forest is located close to Ho Chi Min city - part of which can be seen northwest of the forest.
