This summer's drought is a harsh reminder of how unusual weather can cause havoc for farmers – even in a rich part of the world like Western Europe. While there is a wealth of satellite data available to help predict the risk of drought, it can be daunting for a non-expert to handle. ESA's Food Security Thematic Exploitation Platform (FS-TEP) makes this task much easier.

The European Geoscience Union (EGU) General Assembly 2019 will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 7 to 12 April 2019, bringing together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences.
Earth Observation Events
10 - 14 December
Contributions are welcome for the special Swarm session that will be held at the 2018 AGU Fall Meeting, taking place from 10 to 14 December in Washington DC, USA. The session is named "New and Emerging Magnetosphere-IOnosphere-Thermosphere Coupling Science from Remote and In Situ Spacecraft Measurements: The First 5 Years of Swarm".
The Swarm constellation recently became a quartet with the addition of the CASSIOPE Enhanced Polar Outflow Probe (e-POP); which is referred to as Swarm-E. Since their launch in the Fall of 2013, Swarm and Swarm-E have formed the vanguard of remote and in-situ diagnostics of the coupled Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere (MIT) system. As a quartet, Swarm will enable new insight into MIT coupling processes and wave-particle interactions across multiple spatiotemporal scales.

The upcoming AGU Fall Meeting 2018 Conference runs Monday to Friday from 10 to 14 December 2018, in Washington DC, USA.
Quite noteworthy for the SMOS User community, the session "The global water cycle: linkages of ocean salinity with the atmosphere and terrestrial hydrology" highlights water cycle research that describes linkages between the ocean, atmosphere, and land hydrology.
Contributions are invited on all aspects of water cycle research including analyses undertaken using in situ and remote observations from current (e.g., SMAP, SMOS, GRACE, GPM, GCOM-W), past (e.g., Aquarius, TRMM), and future (e.g., SWOT, GRACE-FO) satellite missions, estimates based on numerical models, data assimilation systems, and climate model projections. Particularly welcome are contributions that consider multiple realms (the ocean, atmosphere, land surface and subsurface), and provide compelling evidence for linkages between these, describing coherent water cycle variability and change.
11 - 13 December
The MED 2018 consultation meeting is planned from 11-13 December and will take place at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy. The aim of the meeting is to define a roadmap for a Mediterranean initiative within ESA's EO Science for Society Programme Element, encompassing topics such as atmosphere, oceanography, climate and land research and applications.

HAPS4ESA 2019 - State-of-the-art and future perspective for High Altitude Pseudo-Satellites in Europe
12 - 14 February 2019
High Altitude Pseudo Satellites (HAPS) operating for extended periods at an altitude of approximately 20 km complement and extend the capabilities of satellites in the domains of Earth Observation, Telecommunication and Navigation. HAPS, in synergy with satellites, offer unique capabilities for the development of value adding applications and science. With over 200 participants, the HAPS4ESA 2017 workshop was the first meeting in Europe bringing together HAPS system, payload and applications developers, institutional stakeholders, space agencies and scientists.
Building on this success, the European Space Agency is again reaching out to the Earth Observation, Telecommunication and Navigation communities to review the State-of-the-Art and the future perspectives of HAPS in a changing Space 4.0 environment and with a specific focus regarding potential ESA HAPS activities to be decided at the next ESA Council at Ministerial level in 2019 (Space19+). The event will take place from 12 to 14 February 2019 at the Event & Convention Centre Leiden, in the Netherlands.

The 2019 Conference on Big Data from Space (BiDS'19) 'Turning Data into Insights', takes place on 19-21 February 2019 in Alte Kongresshalle, Munich, Germany.
The BiDS'19 Conference is co-organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, and the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen).
Big Data from Space refers to the massive spatio-temporal Earth and Space observation data collected by a variety of sensors - ranging from ground based to space-borne - and the synergetic use of data coming from other sources and communities.
21 - 22 February 2019
A user consultation meeting is planned to take place on 21 and 22 February 2019 at ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, to prepare a roadmap for new initiatives on ocean circulation research and applications to be implemented in the ESA EO Science for Society programme element.
5 - 8 March 2019
This International Network follows a series of events addressing remote sensing of vegetation fluorescence. With the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) –Sentinel-3 tandem mission in its implementation phase and fluorescence measurements becoming increasingly available from missions like OCO-2 and Sentinel-5 P, the network will focus on latest developments in fluorescence remote sensing.
This includes fluorescence retrievals and atmospheric correction, product validation using ground and airborne instrumentation, and applications covering modeling at different spatial scales and data assimilation.
In addition, we encourage contributions related to research and applications over coastal and inland waters. The International Network is open to all scientists and engineers interested in exploring the new observation capabilities and synergies provided by the FLEX and the Sentinel-3 mission. The total number of participants is limited.
12 - 14 March 2019
The objective of the Sentinel-2 Validation Team Meeting (S2VT) is to provide a forum for interaction among different researchers from both industrial and academic laboratories and institutions in order to foster the development of efficient and effective Calibration and Validation methods.
The meeting will be held at ENSEEIHT in Toulouse, France from 12 to 14 March 2019. The S2VT aims at collecting independent validation evidence and experimental data to support the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission. The recommendations will be used to contribute to the quality assessment of the mission core products while exploiting Copernicus Sentinel-2 data and to give support to the Cal/Val activities.
The meeting will be structured around a set of plenary presentations given by expert practitioners working with Copernicus Sentinel-2 and other similar missions to inform on the lessons learned and priorities based on experience, a poster session of potential cal/val community activities including validation campaigns and methods.

ESA is pleased to invite you to participate in the 2019 Living Planet Symposium. The event, held every three years, will take place on 13–17 May 2019 at the MiCo Milano Congressi in Milan, Italy. The Symposium is organised with the support of the Italian Space Agency.
The Living Planet Symposium 2019 promises to be bigger and wider ranging than ever before. The event will not only see scientists present their latest findings on Earth's environment and climate derived from satellite data, but will also focus on Earth observation's role in building a sustainable future and a resilient society.
Participants will also be able to explore how emerging technologies are revolutionising the use of Earth observation, creating new opportunities for public and private sector interactions, and how business and the economy can benefit from this new epoch.
