Online Survey on the ESA Research and Service Support (RSS) service

RSS users are kindly requested to participate in a brief online survey (10 questions) aimed at collecting feedback on the ESA Research and Service Support (RSS) service, in order to identify possible service enhancements and new user requirements, also in light of the new ESA missions. The survey should only take a few minutes to complete. In order to participate in the RSS Customer Survey 2014, users need to log in using their own ESA EO-SSO credentials.

Abstract deadline for Swarm Science Meeting (30 May 2014)

In the summer of 2014 DTU Space will host the 3rd Swarm Science Meeting, sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA). This meeting will take place at the IDA Conference Centre in Copenhagen on 19 to 20 June 2014 and is open to the science community at large. Attendance at the workshop is free of charge.

Zaatari Refugee Camp, Jordan

This satellite image shows an area 13 km east of the city of Mafraq in northern Jordan. Sitting geologically between the Syrian Desert and volcanic Hauran plateau, the area experiences a desert climate.

The light-coloured area is the Zaatari Refugee Camp, measuring some 3 km across.

3rd Swarm Science Meeting

19 - 20 June 2014

DTU Space will host the 3rd Swarm Science Meeting, sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA), at the IDA Conference Centre, Copenhagen, in Denmark, from 19 to 20 June 2014.

The aim of this meeting is to present the first science results from Swarm and to report on the status of the mission following the commissioning phase. The Level 1 data products will be released to the community and plans for the use of the data and potential projects will be discussed. Finally, an international media event will be held to highlight Swarm's role within Earth sciences.

40th COSPAR Scientific Assembly

02 - 10 August 2014

The 40th COSPAR Scientific Assembly will be held in Moscow, Russia from 02 to 10 August 2014 and is organised by Lomonsov Moscow State University.

The Assembly features a broad range of topics and aims to promote research in subjects including Earth observation, planetology, astrophysics, astronomy, space science, space biology and medicine. A number of panels on related subjects, including training courses and special events, will also take place during the Assembly.

Approximately 2500 scientists and engineers from across the world will present the latest results in 119 symposia.

EarthCARE Science Workshop

17 - 19 September 2014

The EarthCare Science Workshop will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from 17 to 19 September 2014. The workshop is organised by JAXA in cooperation with ESA. The quantitative representation of clouds, precipitation, aerosol and their radiative properties remains one of the main challenges for climate and weather prediction models. In response to this need, ESA has selected the Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite mission for implementation as the third Earth Explorer Core Mission in cooperation with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

8th Coastal Altimetry Workshop

23 - 24 October 2014

The Coastal Altimetry Community, that is the international community of scientists working on development and applications of altimetry in the coastal zone, will convene for the 8th Coastal Altimetry Workshop at the university city of Konstanz, on the German shore of Lake Constance, from 23 to 24 October 2014.

This Workshop aims at being once again a lively forum for a community-led review of the science and applications of coastal altimetry, from data processing through emerging applications to new technologies.

The workshop will be held just before the SARAL/AltiKa Workshop and the Ocean Surface Topography Science Team (OSTST) meeting, both also taking place in Konstanz on the following week, so that delegates can conveniently attend all these related events.

 

A SAR Altimetry Training Course will also be organised from 21 to 22 October 2014.

2nd ESA Advanced Training Course on Atmospheric Remote Sensing 2014

27 - 30 October 2014

As part of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) programme element, the European Space Agency (ESA) is organising an advanced Atmospheric Training Course, co-sponsored by Forschungszentrum Jülich - Institute of Energy and Climate Research, which will take place in Jülich, Germany, from 27 to 30 October 2014.

The aim of the course is to train the next generation of European and Canadian Principal Investigators (PIs), and explain the principles and applications of atmospheric remote sensing. Tools, methods and data products will be discussed as well as the applications of ESA EO (including the future Sentinel-5P) and Third Party Missions for atmospheric remote sensing.

The Earth Observation for Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions Science 2014, will be held in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, from 28 to 31 October 2014.

This joint ESA-SOLAS-EGU conference aims at bringing together the EO and SOLAS communities, as well as scientific institutions and space agencies involved in the observation, characterisation and forecasting of ocean-atmosphere interactions and their impacts.

2014 Conference on Big Data from Space (BiDS '14) - Research, Technology and Innovation (RT&I)

12 - 14 November 2014

The 2014 Conference on Big Data from Space (BiDS '14) took place from 12 to 14 November 2014 at ESA/ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.

This conference, jointly organised by ESA, SatCen, and JRC, aimed to bring together researchers, engineers, and users in the area of Big Data in the Space sector. The focus is on the whole data lifecycle, ranging from data acquisition by spaceborne and ground-based sensors to data management, analysis and exploitation in the domains of Earth Observation, Space Science, Space Engineering, Space Weather, etc. Special emphasis is placed on highlighting synergies and cross-fertilisation opportunities from domains like Climate Change, Solid Earth Science, Planetary Sciences, Life Science, Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Social Sciences, etc.

The conference aims to contribute towards a common "Big Data from Space" scientific and programmatic framework; widen competences and expertise of universities, labs and industrial actors; foster networking of experts and users towards better access and sharing of data, tools and resources; leverage innovation, spin-in, spin off of technologies, and business development arising from research and industry progress.

Understanding the Carbon and Water Cycles using SMOS data and models

13 - 14 November 2014

This SMOS workshop, organised by CESBIO and ESA will be held in Toulouse, France from 13 to 14 November 2014.

The workshop aims to bring together the EO, SMOS, Earth system science and modelling communities involved in the observation, characterisation and forecasting of land surface processes and their impacts. In particular, the event represents a unique opportunity to facilitate the communications and scientific exchanges among these different communities in order to enhance the coordination of specific scientific efforts and advocate for a common view of major scientific needs and priority areas for the future.

The outcome of this workshop will include recommendations to further advance (1) the development and validation of novel SMOS products and observations (also in synergy with other EO datasets), (2) the development of novel applications and science results that may exploit the full capacity of SMOS in the context of key land processes and their impacts on climate (3) the effective assimilation of SMOS observations and products into advanced model / data assimilation systems/approaches and (4) the formulation of a research agenda that may guide ESA and other institutions to initiate dedicated future activities.

5th International GOCE User Workshop

25 - 28 November 2014

The European Space Agency, in partnership with the International Oceanographic Commission is organising the 5th International GOCE User Workshop at UNESCO, Paris from 25 to 28 November 2014.

This workshop is intended to provide current and future users of GOCE data products with the opportunity to obtain the latest information on the satellite gravity mission, its performance as well as details regarding the latest release of the data products and user services and tools. The workshop is seeking the presentation of new results based on GOCE data in all application areas. Prior to the workshop, the European Space Agency plans to release the fifth generation gravity field solutions based on GOCE data.

Ocean Salinity Science & Salinity Remote Sensing Workshop will be held at Met Office, Exeter, United Kingdom from 26 to 28 November 2014. The 3 day workshop is an open meeting to review progress and future priorities for measuring ocean salinity.

The focus of this workshop will be: To review progress made in using Ocean Salinity data (SSS and subsurface), to identify scientific challenges and benefits of using satellite SSS data in the wider ocean community in synergy with other data sources (in situ, satellite, model); and thus, to foster the use of the new SSS data from space in the wider ocean and climate science communities.

POLinSAR 2015 and 1st BIOMASS Science Workshop

The European Space Agency is jointly organising the 7th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry, POLinSAR 2015, and the 1st BIOMASS Science workshop. The workshops will be held in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy on the following dates:

  • POLinSAR 2015: 26 to 30 January 2015
  • 1st BIOMASS Science workshop: 27 to 30 January 2015

The objectives of the workshops are to provide a forum for exchange on the latest advances and research in SAR polarimetry and to gather a scientific community for ESA's future BIOMASS mission.

FRINGE 2015

23 - 27 March 2015

The European Space Agency, in the context of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) element, is organising the 9th International Workshop Fringe 2015 'Advances in the Science and Applications of SAR Interferometry and Sentinel-1 InSAR'. The event will be hosted in ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy from 23 to 27 March 2015.

The workshop is open to scientists, Sentinel-1 data users, students, representatives from national, European and international space agencies, and value adding industries.

The official language of the workshop is English. No participation fees will be charged. Participants are expected to finance their own travel and accommodation expenses.

2nd SMOS Science Conference

25 - 29 May 2015

The 2nd SMOS Science Conference is jointly organised by ESA, CNES and SMOS-MODE and will take place at ESA-ESAC, near Madrid (Spain) from 25 to 29 May 2015.

The focus of this conference will deviate from previous events in that the emphasis will be on applications of SMOS data, including operational services, the development of novel data products, the synergistic use of SMOS data with other data sources and the potential of SMOS data for the generation of long-term data sets. The workshop will also cover common themes such as the quality of the Level 1 data products and calibration and validation activities.

The 2nd SMOS Science Conference will be preceded by a SMOS Training Course from 18 to 22 May 2015, organised by CESBIO and held as well at the ESA-ESAC premises near Madrid.
