SMOS and Proba-2 installed in launch tower

28 October 2009

In readiness for launch on 2 November, ESA's SMOS and Proba-2 satellites - encapsulated in the launcher fairing - have been transported from the cleanroom and installed in the launch tower at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia.

Sahara desert, Algeria

The image shows the extraordinary landscape of the Tanezrouft Basin, one of the most desolate parts of the Sahara desert, in south-central Algeria. The region is known as "land of terror" because of its lack of water and vegetation.
Japan's ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) captured this image on 24 June 2009 with its Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type-2 (AVNIR-2) instrument, which is designed to chart land cover and vegetation in visible and near infrared spectral bands with a resolution of 10 m.

PV2009 Conference - Ensuring Long-Term Preservation and Adding Value to Scientific and Technical ...

After four very successful events, PV 2002 at CNES in Toulouse, France, PV 2004 at ESA/ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, PV 2005 at DCC in Edinburgh, UK and PV 2007 at DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, the conference series continues to address prospects in the domain of scientific and technical data preservation together with value adding to these data. Deadline for registration is 30 October 2009.

ESA Living Planet Symposium 2010

The 2010 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium follows the previous successful ENVISAT Symposia in Montreux (2007), Salzburg (2004), Gothenburg (2000), Florence (1997), Hamburg (1993) and Cannes (1992). The Symposium will provide an opportunity to present results from missions in exploitation (ERS-2, ENVISAT, GOCE, SMOS, CRYOSAT, Third Party Missions) and to introduce future ESA missions (GMES Sentinels, Earth Explorers, meteorological missions) and national EO missions.

NEST (Next ESA SAR Toolbox) release 4A - 1.6 available

The Next ESA SAR Toolbox (NEST) is a toolbox for reading, post-processing, analysing and visualising data of ESA SAR missions and Third Party missions starting from Level 1 data. Distributed as fully open source, NEST easily allows users the development of new readers and post-processors for SAR data by means of an Application Programming Interface (API).

The new version NEST 4A - 1.6 is now released.
