The biomass of the northern hemisphere's forests has been mapped with greater precision than ever before thanks to satellites, improving our understanding of the carbon cycle and our prediction of Earth's future climate.
Earth Watching Activities
A collection of SAR (ERS/Envisat and ALOS) as well as Landsat satellite images and animations featuring the city of Dubai, showing the city's growth along the coast, through the years.
Image of the Week
On the north east coast of the Iberian Peninsula, the Spanish city of Barcelona is pictured in this image from Japan's ALOS satellite.
Near the top right corner, the circular Plaça de les Glories Catalanes was meant to be the city centre in the original urban plan. The avenue, Avinguda Diagonal, cuts through this square and the city.
Earth Observation Events
09 - 13 September 2013
The 2013 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium follows the previous successful symposia held in Bergen (2010), Montreux (2007) and Salzburg (2004). The event will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom from 09 to 13 September 2013 and is organised with the support of the UK Space Agency.
The aim of the Symposium is to present the results of ESA EO missions exploitation by providing a forum for investigators to report and discuss results of on-going science activities.
30 September - 04 October 2013
The first Microwave Ocean Remote Sensing Training School organised by the SMOS-MODE EU COST Action will take place in Barcelona, Spain, from 30 September to 04 October 2013.
Through a combination of theoretical lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions the school will cover all key aspects of large-scale ocean monitoring, with a particular focus on SMOS data processing and applications. The number of participants is limited to 25 and applicants will be selected on a competitive basis.
Registration deadline: 28 June 2013
07 - 08 October 2013
The Coastal Altimetry Community, that is the international community of scientists working on development and applications of altimetry in the coastal zone, will meet at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder, Colorado, from 07 to 08 October 2013 for the 7th Workshop of the successful Coastal Altimetry series.
The workshop will provide a lively forum for a community-led review of the science and applications of coastal altimetry, from data processing through emerging applications to new technologies.
Extended registration deadline: 12 August 2013
