EO Open Science Conference 2016 abstract submission deadline extended

The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising the second Earth Observation Open Science community consultation at ESRIN (Frascati, Italy) from 12 to 14 September 2016 to explore the new challenges and opportunities for EO research created by the rapid developments in digital technologies.

Please note the deadline for abstract submission is 30 May 2016.

Sentinel-1 helping Cyclone Roanu relief

Cyclone Roanu has claimed over 100 lives in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and has left tens of thousands in need of aid. Officials are looking to the sky for information on flooded areas to analyse the cyclone's aftermath and support emergency response activities.

Sentinel-1A spots potential oil slick from missing EgyptAir plane

The Sentinel-1A radar satellite has detected a potential oil slick in the eastern Mediterranean Sea - in the same area where EgyptAir flight MS804 disappeared early yesterday morning on its way from Paris to Cairo.

Living Planet Symposium Questionnaire

ESA has created a User Satisfaction Survey which aims to help us to improve the services to all users of ESA Earth Observation, Copernicus Sentinel and Third Party Missions.

More than 600 participants have already provided their feedback during the recent Living Planet Symposium in Prague.

The survey, addressed to both scientific and commercial data users, will remain open until 31 May 2016.

Fire at Fort McMurray, Canada

A large wildfire has been raging in the city of Fort McMurray in Canada since the start of May. The city, home to over 90,000 people, was evacuated on 3 May and this Landsat 8 comparison examines the city before and after the fires began.

Chile's salt flat

The Sentinel-2A satellite takes us to the diverse landscape of the eastern Atacama desert in South America in this image acquired on 8 March 2016. The region pictured lies around 200km east of the Chilean city of Antofagasta on the Pacific coast (not pictured), and is virtually devoid of vegetation.

European Space Solutions - Bringing Space to Earth

30 May - 03 June 2016

Under the auspices of the 2016 Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU, the fourth edition of European Space Solutions is coming to the Hague, the Netherlands, from 30 May to 03 June 2016.

Taking place at the World Forum Convention Centre, the major 5-day conference will bring together business and the public sector with users and developers of space-based solutions. Registration is free of charge but mandatory.

1st ESA Advanced Training Course on Remote Sensing of the Cryosphere

3rd Satellite Soil Moisture Validation and Application Workshop

21 - 22 September 2016

The 3rd Satellite Soil Moisture Validation and Application workshop will be held in New York City, USA, from 21 to 22 September 2016 (the exact location has yet to be decided).

The objective of this workshop series is to discuss and reconcile methodological advances in the validation and application of global satellite soil moisture data.

The workshop is unique in that it brings together satellite soil moisture users and developers to focus on both the derivation and exploration of soil moisture data from both passive and active microwave satellite missions (SMAP, SMOS, ASCAT, AMSR-2, Sentinel-1, and other legacy missions).

 

Please note that this workshop will follow a SMAP Cal/Val Workshop on 19 and 20 September 2016 that will be held in Manhattan and is open to all that are interested in SMAP.

International workshop on measuring high-wind speeds over the ocean

15 - 17 November 2016

A three day workshop on the science and applications of remotely-sensed ocean surface winds, with a focus on high or extreme wind speeds. The workshop will be held at the Met Office headquarters in the cathedral city of Exeter, United Kingdom, from 15 to 17 November 2016.

Topics will include:

  • Status of monitoring ocean-surface winds from space: current and future instruments
  • Methods and models for retrieving high winds from satellite observing systems
  • Ocean surface wind products, synergies, and validation of high wind speeds
  • Applications for ocean-atmosphere interactions
  • Applications for numerical weather prediction (NWP)
  • Applications for tropical cyclone and extra-tropical storms
  • Climate applications
