This new website offers a modern look and service, with ease of access to our data and information. While the visual presentation of the website is different, the prior content remains, though with new names for some of the site areas.

ENVISAT instruments back to nominal operations after on-board memory anomaly

26 January 2012

Following the interruption of ENVISAT nominal operations on 23 January 2012 at ~07:30 (see news from 19 Jan 2012), all instruments have been gradually switched back to measurement mode starting on 23 January 2012 at 15:13.

AATSR outgassing

23 January 2012

An AATSR outgassing is currently under way. This began after the payload switch off on 23 January at 07:30 UTC and is expected to end on 26 January 2012 at approximately 07:10 UTC.

Satellites detect abundance of fresh water in the Arctic

ESA satellites show that a large dome of fresh water has been building up in the Arctic Ocean over the last 15 years. A change in wind direction could cause the water to spill into the north Atlantic, cooling Europe.

Earth Observation (EO) data and services can deliver significant benefits to the scientific, public and private sector communities and this workshop examines the potential value of this data to the insurance industry.

Sentinel-2 Preparatory Symposium

23 - 27 April 2012

The European Space Agency is organising the first 'Sentinel-2 Preparatory Symposium', which will be hosted in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, from 23 to 27 April 2012.

The Symposium is open to ESA Principal Investigators, co-investigators, Sentinel-2 users, scientists, students, representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industries.

Atmospheric Science Conference 2012

18 - 22 June 2012

The European Space Agency is organizing a conference on the topical theme atmosphere to provide scientists and data users with the opportunity to present first-hand and up-to-date results from their ongoing research and application development activities using data from atmospheric instruments on ERS-2, Envisat, Metop and ESA Third Party Missions.

The Conference will be held at the Oud Sint Jan congress centre in Bruges in Belgium.

SeaSAR 2012 Workshop

18 - 22 June 2012

The European Space Agency and the Norwegian Space Centre are jointly organising the fourth SAR oceanography workshop, SEASAR 2012, entitled "Advances in SAR Oceanography", which is to be hosted in Tromso, Norway, from 18 to 22 June 2012.

The workshop is open to scientists and students in the field of SAR oceanography including ESA Principle Investigators and co-investigators, to users of data from future SAR missions like Sentinel-1 and Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM) and to representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industry.

ESA EO Summer School 2012 on earth system monitoring and modelling

30 July - 10 August 2012

The European Space Agency (ESA) organizes a series of summer schools on Monitoring of the Earth System to promote the exploitation of Earth Observation EO data across disciplines, with a specific focus on their assimilation into Earth System models.

The two-week course, held in ESA/ESRIN (near Rome, Italy) during August (typically every two years) aims to provide students with an integrated end-to-end perspective going from measurement techniques to end-user applications.

The school is open to young researchers (Ph.D. students, young post-doctoral scientists) who are specialised in a variety of Earth Science disciplines and wish to expand and improve their knowledge and skills.

20 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry

To mark the 20 year anniversary of the launch of ERS-1 and TOPEX/POSEIDON, ESA, in collaboration with the French Space Agency, CNES, organised a Symposium in Venice, Italy. This event was sponsored by other partner agencies and organisations supporting the development of altimetry.
