Envisat: ESA's continuous efforts to regain contact with the satellite

Following the loss of communications with the Envisat satellite on 8 April 2012, attempts have continued to re-contact the satellite, without success so far.

Investigations are being performed to interpret information on the spacecraft status collected over the last weeks. The information gathered is used to identify whether the spacecraft can receive telemetry commands as, in parallel to the investigations, attempts are being made to send ground commands to the satellite.

After nearly a year and a half of operations, CryoSat has yielded its first seasonal variation map of Arctic sea-ice thickness. Results from ESA’s ice mission were presented today at the Royal Society in London.

A new version of the Level 2 Soil Moisture processor (V5.51) has been deployed in the operational chain on 24 April 2012. The first data set generated with the new processor has the start acquisition time of 23 April 2012 08:35 UTC.

GRACE - Planned switch-off of accelerometers

20 April 2012

The Instrument Control Unit (ICU) of the GRACE-1 accelerometer was switched-off yesterday (April 19) at 12:17 UTC. The GRACE-2 accelerometer ICU was switched-off today (April 20) at 11:42 UTC. Both activities are related with battery load reduction before the satellites enter the next beta prime=0 event on May 3, 2012. The switch-on of both ICUs is planned for approximately May 15, 2012.

International Forum on Satellite Earth Observation for Geo-Hazard Risk Management

21 - 23 May 2012

ESA is organising the International Forum on Satellite Observation for Geo-Hazard Risk Management which will be held on 21 - 23 May 2012 at the Santorini Convention Centre in Greece.

In association with the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the forum will give the opportunity for International experts to meet and discuss how space technology can help us prepare for and respond to natural disasters.

This forum is open to geo-science users and experts working within the field of geo-hazard risk assessment and management, including representatives from space agencies and other value-adding industries. The forum is also open to Earth Observation mission owners/operators and users such as risk management authorities and, land planning and risk prevention service providers and infrastructure managers.

SeaSAR 2012 Workshop

18 - 22 June 2012

The European Space Agency and the Norwegian Space Centre are jointly organising the fourth SAR oceanography workshop, SEASAR 2012, entitled "Advances in SAR Oceanography", which is to be hosted in Tromso, Norway, from 18 to 22 June 2012.

The workshop is open to scientists and students in the field of SAR oceanography including ESA Principle Investigators and co-investigators, to users of data from future SAR missions like Sentinel-1 and Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM) and to representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industry.

GlobTemperature - User Consultation Meeting

27 - 28 June 2012

The aim of this first GlobTemperature User Consultation Meeting which will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, is to survey users' requirements for satellite land surface temperature information.  

The other objective of this meeting is to explore the feasibility of meeting them with available data and techniques, and set a list of priority requirements to be addressed by a potential future GlobTemperature project.

The Eighth Conference on Image Information Mining will be held at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Oberpfaffenhofen, Munich, Germany in October 2012. Release of ODESA environment software
