The 16 Hz Ionospheric electron density Swarm dataset has been updated to v 0102.

The old version 0101 has been removed and users that have already downloaded such data are recommended to discard it and refer to the new version instead.

Impact of ECMWF forecast cycle 41r2 on SMOS level 2 sea surface salinity and soil moisture products

On 8 March 2016, ECMWF upgraded the integrated forecasting system (IFS). The new cycle, labelled 41r2 (previous cycle was labelled 41r1), includes a number of enhancements to the model, to the data assimilation and the increase of the horizontal resolution which is now about 9 km for the high-resolution (HRES) forecast and the data assimilation schema. Updated version of GOCE/GRACE gravity gradients grids available

21 March 2016

Out of the complete set of 6 global gravity gradients grids, at 225 km and at 255 km altitude, two full gradient grids have been updated due to computation algorithm improvements and a correction of the file header. The new grids now cover a longer time window and exhibit a reduced noise level.

This 100 m Proba-V image of 8 July 2015 shows the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The reef is recognisable by the light-blue taints, while deeper parts of the Pacific Ocean appear dark-blue.

2nd EARSeL SIG LU/LC and NASA LCLUC joint workshop

The EARSeL Special Interest Group on Land Use and Land Cover (SIG LU/LC) and NASA Land-Cover/Land-Use Change (LCLUC) Program are organising their 2nd joint workshop "Advancing horizons for land cover services entering the big data era".

The event will take place in Prague, Czech Republic on 6 and 7 May 2016.

The workshop will be conceptually linked with and support the objectives of the ESA Living Planet Symposium 2016, which follows the workshop on 9 to 13 May 2016, as a brainstorming preparation.

Living Planet Symposium 2016

09 - 13 May 2016

The 2016 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 09 to 13 May 2016. It is organised with the support of the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic.

The event, which in 2013 attracted 1800 participants, will focus on the exploitation of satellite data in various thematic domains: Atmosphere, Oceanography, Cryosphere, Land, Hazards, Climate and Meteorology, Solid Earth/Geodesy, Near-Earth Environment, New Methodologies and Products, Open Science 2.0.

Earth Observation and Cryosphere Science 2016

10 - 13 May 2016

The Earth Observation and Cryosphere Science 2016 conference will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, from 10 to 13 May 2016. The event is jointly organised by the European Space Agency and the Climate and Cryosphere Project.

The purpose of this topical conference is to advance our knowledge on the potential offered by EO technology to answer some of the major open questions in cryosphere science; to review the latest developments on advanced EO-based geo-information data products addressing key cryosphere processes; and identify the major scientific requirements and challenges of the cryosphere scientific community for the coming years where EO may contribute.

4S Symposium

30 May - 03 June 2016

The 4S Symposium will be held in Valletta, Malta, from 30 May to 03 June 2016.

The special topic of 2016, Small Satellites Go Viral!, will be addressed in a dedicated session on the first day of the event. Contributions addressing this topic are highly welcome.

As in previous years, the programme will also cover technical sessions: Mission and System Analysis; Applications such as Earth Observation, Science, Telecommunication and Navigation; New Technologies at system, sub-system and component level. A special session will be dedicated to access to space of Small Satellites, as launchers, platform cross-compatibility.

The 2nd International workshop on Air-Sea Gas Flux Climatology follows on from the first successful workshop that was held 2013. This is highly interdisciplinary workshop aimed at bringing the multiple communities studying air-sea exchange and gas fluxes together to discuss common, aims, goals and challenges. The workshop aims to bring together the in situ, remote sensing and modelling scientific communities and funding bodies.

3rd Satellite Soil Moisture Validation and Application Workshop

21 - 22 September 2016

The 3rd Satellite Soil Moisture Validation and Application workshop will be held in New York City, USA, from 21 to 22 September 2016 (the exact location has yet to be decided).

The objective of this workshop series is to discuss and reconcile methodological advances in the validation and application of global satellite soil moisture data.

The workshop is unique in that it brings together satellite soil moisture users and developers to focus on both the derivation and exploration of soil moisture data from both passive and active microwave satellite missions (SMAP, SMOS, ASCAT, AMSR-2, Sentinel-1, and other legacy missions).

 

Please note that this workshop will follow a SMAP Cal/Val Workshop on 19 and 20 September 2016 that will be held in Manhattan and is open to all that are interested in SMAP.

International workshop on measuring high-wind speeds over the ocean

15 - 17 November 2016

A three day workshop on the science and applications of remotely-sensed ocean surface winds, with a focus on high or extreme wind speeds. The workshop will be held at the Met Office headquarters in the cathedral city of Exeter, United Kingdom, from 15 to 17 November 2016.

Topics will include:

  • Methods and models for retrieving high winds from satellite observing systems
