Near the centre of Antarctica, measurements from CryoSat show an unusual pattern in the ice sheet's elevation. Scientists have now found the reason for this pattern - and the discovery is leading to even more accurate measurements from ESA's ice mission.

CryoSat data acquired in September 2010 has been reprocessed and is available on the CryoSat dissemination server ftp://science-pds.cryosat.esa.int.
The missing months to complete the Baseline B reprocessing campaign will be uploaded soon.

As global temperatures gradually increase, more water is expected to evaporate into the atmosphere. But using satellite data, scientists have discovered that El Niño-induced droughts have caused global declines in evapotranspiration despite rising temperatures.

A new website has been designed and launched for NEST (Next ESA SAR Toolbox), with the aims of making the website more consistent with the ESA web portal look & feel and making NEST both more usable and more accessible for users.
Earth Observation Events
22 - 24 April 2014
The 5th Workshop on Remote Sensing of Vegetation Fluorescence will be held in Paris, France from 22 to 24 April 2014, and will address the current status of research and understanding of vegetation fluorescence, within the framework of the upcoming selection by ESA of the Earth Explorer 8 mission to go forward in the next mission phase.
This workshop will be an opportunity among various scientific communities to discuss and communicate about new advances in the FLEX mission preparatory activities, as well as generic topics related to vegetation fluorescence and its applications.
Among the focus topics to be addressed: instrument development; methods for fluorescence retrieval; techniques for signal analysis; ground and airborne measurement campaigns; fluorescence models at leaf, canopy and TOA levels; model inversions; relationships between fluorescence, physiology, canopy structure and CO2 assimilation; and fluorescence applications in environment monitoring.
27 April - 02 May 2014
The EGU General Assembly 2014 will be held at the ACV centre in Vienna, Austria, from 27 April to 02 May 2014. The event will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. Especially for young scientists, it is the aim of the EGU to provide a forum where they can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geosciences. See in particular the session dedicated to SMOS.
The 10th International Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Measurements from space (IWGGMS-10) will take place at ESA-ESTEC in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, from 05 to 07 May 2014.
The goal of this workshop is to assess the latest science and technologies of greenhouse gas (GHG) measurements from space. The workshop will address new scientific findings obtained from current and past satellite missions (ENVISAT SCIAMACHY, Aqua AIRS, MeteoSat IASI, GOSAT TANSO-FTS, and Aura TES), as well as the concepts of future satellite missions that are near launch or in preparation (OCO-2, Sentinel-5 precursor, TanSat, OCO-3, MERLIN, GOSAT-2, MicroCarb, Sentinel-5, CarbonSat, ASCENDS, etc.).
Registration deadline: 18 April 2014
20 - 22 May 2014
The European Space Agency, in the context of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) element, is organising an event dedicated to prepare for scientific exploitation of the Sentinel-2 mission, entitled "Sentinel-2 for Science Workshop", which will be hosted in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, from 20 to 22 May 2014.
The workshop is open to ESA Principal Investigators, co-investigators, Sentinel-2 users, scientists, students, representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industries.
04 - 14 August 2014
The European Space Agency (ESA) organises a series of summer schools on Monitoring of the Earth System to promote the exploitation of Earth Observation (EO) data across disciplines, with a specific focus on their assimilation into Earth System models.
The next two-week course will be held at ESA/ESRIN (Frascati, Italy) from 04 to 14 August 2014. It aims to provide students with an integrated end-to-end perspective going from measurement techniques to end-user applications.
Application submission deadline: 01 April 2014
08 - 12 September 2014
As part of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) programme element, the European Space Agency (ESA) organises each year an advanced Land Training Course devoted to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit data from ESA and operational EO Missions for science and applications development.
