Atmospheric Composition Validation and Evolution 2016

18 - 20 October 2016

The European Space Agency is organising the fifth workshop on Atmospheric Composition Validation and Calibration activities, providing science and Cal/Val experts with the opportunity to present their latest results of their ongoing research and application developments including evolution aspects of the validation methods for future satellite missions.

The conference will be held at ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, from 18 to 20 October 2016.

During the workshop the status of the recently reprocessed data sets from atmospheric instruments on ERS-2, Envisat and the data sets of Metop and ESA Third Party Missions shall be presented. Evolution aspects of the workshop will focus on ground based validation networks and their development in view of the Sentinel and Earth Explorer (EarthCARE and ADM-Aeolus) operations as well as Fiducial Reference Measurements. Furthermore, the workshop shall provide the opportunity to address evolution aspects of the Sentinel-3/ Sentinel-5 Precursor products for atmospheric applications.

Ocean salinity and water cycle variability session at AGU Fall Meeting 2016

12 - 16 December 2016

The "Ocean salinity, water cycle variability and science results from satellite measurements" session will take place at the AGU Fall Meeting 2016 in San Francisco, USA, from 12 to 16 December 2016. With approximately 24,000 attendees in 2015, AGU's Fall Meeting is the largest Earth and space science meeting in the world.

This session highlights research investigating ocean salinity, an Essential Climate Variable (ECV), as a key parameter that links various elements of the water cycle to ocean circulation dynamics and climate. Contributions are invited on all aspects of ocean salinity investigations, including analyses undertaken from in situ and satellite observations, numerical models, and data assimilation. We particularly welcome contributions that have utilised sea surface salinity (SSS) measurements from the recent pathfinder satellite missions (SMOS, Aquarius/SAC-D, and SMAP).

FLEX 2017 workshop

17 - 19 January 2017

The ‘Remote sensing of fluorescence, photosynthesis and vegetation status' or FLEX 2017 workshop will take place at ESA-ESRIN, in Frascati, Italy from 17 to 19 January 2017.

The Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) was selected as ESA's 8th Earth Explorer mission to provide information on terrestrial vegetation layer and plant health. FLEX will fly in formation with the Sentinel-3 satellite(s), making use of both Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 observations, with a planned launch being foreseen in the 2022+ timeframe.

This workshop will bring together remote sensing experts and potential users, exploring the new observation capabilities provided by the FLEX, Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 missions as well as synergies.

Workshop on Vicarious Adjustment

21 - 23 February 2017

The European Space Agency is organising the "Workshop on Vicarious Adjustment". The event will be hosted at ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy from 21 to 23 February 2017. The objective of this workshop is to gather experts in the different fields involved in vicarious adjustment and open a wide range debate on the best way to go for future long term vicarious infrastructure.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has launched a project called Fiducial Reference Measurements for Satellite Ocean Colour (FRM4SOC). Led by Tartu Observatory Estonia, FRM4SOC aims to establish and maintain SI traceability of Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRM) for satellite OCR. To ensure the best possible product delivery to users, ESA is organising this international workshop to evaluate the options for future European satellite OCR vicarious adjustment infrastructure for the Sentinel-3 OLCI and Sentinel-2 MSI series.

North American CryoSat science meeting and geodetic missions workshop

20 - 24 March 2017

The first North American CryoSat Science Meeting will take place in Banff (Alberta, Canada) from 20 to 24 March 2017.

The meeting will provide a unique and timely forum for scientists and end-users of CryoSat data to share the state-of-the-art in research and applications, review mission achievements and prepare for the continued use of the CryoSat mission in the future. Organised approximately seven years after launch of CryoSat, the meeting will highlight areas where the mission has made significant contribution including cryosphere, oceanography, geodesy, hydrology, topography, meteorology and climate change. Presentations on the use of CryoSat data for operational applications and demonstrations of novel scientific applications are also encouraged. The meeting will be instrumental to outline the international collaboration in the exploitation of data, to propose new scientific requirements, to identify new scientific challenges in view of the extension beyond 2019 and, in general, for its possible successor.

The meeting is held in parallel with the Fourth Swarm science meeting. There will be a one-day joint session to address common thematic applications related to gravimetric applications.
