ESA has just concluded a successful two-day Council meeting at ministerial level in Naples, Italy. Ministers from ESA's 20 member states and Canada today allocated €10 billion for ESA's space activities and programmes for the years to come.
ERS and Envisat
20 November 2012
An anticlockwise rotation of sea-surface height patterns has been observed near Norway's west coast. Archived data from radar altimeters on the ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat satellites show the wave-like motion around the centre of the Lofoten Basin.
21 November 2012
The European Space Agency and EUMETSAT today signed the agreement on the Meteosat Third Generation weather satellite system at the ESA Ministerial Council in Naples, Italy.
Image of the Week
The Tibesti Mountains, located mostly in Chad with the northern slopes extending into Libya, are captured in this Envisat image.
This range of inactive - with some potentially active - volcanoes in the central Sahara desert covers about 100,000 sq km. Home to the Toubou people today, the region is known for its ancient cave paintings, mostly dating from the fifth to the third millennium BC.

21 - 25 January 2013
The 2nd Advanced Course on Radar Polarimetry will be held in ESA/ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
The course will provide a substantial and balanced introduction to the basics and advanced concepts of theory, scattering concepts, systems and applications typical of radar polarimetric remote sensing, as well as hands-on computing exercises on PolSAR and Pol-InSAR data processing for remote sensing applications
28 January - 01 February 2013
The 6th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry, POLinSAR 2013, will be hosted in ESRIN, Frascati, Italy. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for scientific exchange to present results and progress in the fields of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry. The Symposium is open to ESA Principal Investigators, scientists, students, future SAR missions users, representatives from space agencies and value adding industries.
Submission of full paper deadline: 15 February 2013
12 - 14 March 2013
The Third CryoSat user workshop will be held in Dresden, Germany, from 12 to 14 March 2013.
This workshop is intended to provide a forum to present and discuss all topics related to the exploitation of the CryoSat mission and to identify novel scientific challenges.
The workshop is open to all scientists with an interest in the CryoSat mission and its data products.
Registration deadline: 22 January 2013
13 - 15 March 2013
The European Space Agency is organising a workshop on Atmospheric Chemistry and Composition Validation and Product Evolution. The Workshop will be held from 13 to 15 March 2013 in ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
The aim of the workshop is to present Cal/Val results from ENVISAT, ERS-2 and other Third Party Missions (GOSAT/Odin/OMI/SciSat/Terra-Aqua) to encourage contributions for future ESA missions (Earth Explorers, Sentinels) using existing data sets and Cal/Val infrastructures.
15 - 17 April 2013
The SMOS & Aquarius Science Workshop will take place at IFREMER, in Brest, France, from 15 to 17 April 2013.
The main objectives of the workshop are to provide the SMOS and Aquarius Science communities with an overview on the present quality of the provided data and an outlook on future algorithm developments as well as providing a forum for discussion on specific topics related to improving sea surface salinity and soil moisture retrievals through dedicated working groups.
09 - 13 September 2013
The 2013 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium follows the previous successful symposia held in Bergen (2010), Montreux (2007) and Salzburg (2004). The event will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom from 09 to 13 September 2013 and is organised with the support of the UK Space Agency.
The aim of the Symposium is to present the results of ESA EO missions exploitation by providing a forum for investigators to report and discuss results of on-going science activities.
