A huge network of glaciers, carrying ice thousands of kilometres across Antarctica, has been discovered as a result of space agencies' efforts to focus their satellites on Earth's icy regions during the International Polar Year. These new findings are critical to understanding sea-level rise.

The European Space Agency is organising Fringe 2011, its 8th International Workshop on "Advances in the Science and Applications of SAR Interferometry", which will be hosted in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, between 19 - 23 September 2011. The series of workshops started in 1992 and are currently organised by ESA every two years.

The international community of scientists working on development and applications of altimetry in the coastal zone are meeting in San Diego, USA, between the 16-18 October 2011.
The aim of these workshops is to bring together people dealing with satellite altimetry applied to the Coastal Zone to discuss a range of topics, from data processing through emerging applications to new technologies.

An advanced training course in radar interferometry is organised by the Peruvian Space Agency (CONIDA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National University of Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), in collaboration with the Technical University of Delft. The course will be held in Lima, Peru. Participation is free, but costs for transport, accommodation, food, etc need to be met by the participants. The course will be held partly in English and partly in Spanish.

'Advances in geological remote sensing' is this year's theme for the Geological Remote Sensing Group (GRSG) AGM. The event to be held in Frascati, Italy, also includes the second OGEO workshop aimed at bridging the oil and gas sector with the EO Service community. The GRSG will address applied and fundamental research that explores the application of remote sensing in mapping, monitoring and understanding the relationship between geology and the environment.
