Romania is leading the way in an ambitious project to build an instrument to detect and monitor tiny particles suspended in the air. The new 'lidar' - the first of its kind in Europe - is set to contribute to ESA's satellites that focus on the atmosphere.
Earth Observation Events
12 - 14 November 2014
The 2014 Conference on Big Data from Space (BiDS '14) took place from 12 to 14 November 2014 at ESA/ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
This conference, jointly organised by ESA, SatCen, and JRC, aimed to bring together researchers, engineers, and users in the area of Big Data in the Space sector. The focus is on the whole data lifecycle, ranging from data acquisition by spaceborne and ground-based sensors to data management, analysis and exploitation in the domains of Earth Observation, Space Science, Space Engineering, Space Weather, etc. Special emphasis is placed on highlighting synergies and cross-fertilisation opportunities from domains like Climate Change, Solid Earth Science, Planetary Sciences, Life Science, Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Social Sciences, etc.
The conference aims to contribute towards a common "Big Data from Space" scientific and programmatic framework; widen competences and expertise of universities, labs and industrial actors; foster networking of experts and users towards better access and sharing of data, tools and resources; leverage innovation, spin-in, spin off of technologies, and business development arising from research and industry progress.
26 - 30 January 2015
The European Space Agency is jointly organising the 7th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry, POLinSAR 2015, and the 1st BIOMASS Science workshop. The workshops will be held in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy on the following dates:
The objectives of the workshops are to provide a forum for exchange on the latest advances and research in SAR polarimetry and to gather a scientific community for ESA's future BIOMASS mission.
10 - 13 February 2015
The ADM-Aeolus Science and Cal/Val Workshop will take place at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, from 10 to 13 February 2015.
The objective of the workshop is to bring scientists and Cal/Val Principle Investigators (PI) together at ESA to present and discuss the upcoming ADM-Aeolus mission and its products, science applications and Calibration and Validation aspects. Furthermore, the scientific community are invited to present their plans for the use of the Aeolus data and to start getting familiar with the expected products and product quality.
23 - 27 March 2015
The European Space Agency, in the context of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) element, is organising the 9th International Workshop Fringe 2015 'Advances in the Science and Applications of SAR Interferometry and Sentinel-1 InSAR'. The event will be hosted in ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy from 23 to 27 March 2015.
The workshop is open to scientists, Sentinel-1 data users, students, representatives from national, European and international space agencies, and value adding industries.
The official language of the workshop is English. No participation fees will be charged. Participants are expected to finance their own travel and accommodation expenses.
25 - 29 May 2015
The 2nd SMOS Science Conference is jointly organised by ESA, CNES and SMOS-MODE and will take place at ESA-ESAC, near Madrid (Spain) from 25 to 29 May 2015.
The focus of this conference will deviate from previous events in that the emphasis will be on applications of SMOS data, including operational services, the development of novel data products, the synergistic use of SMOS data with other data sources and the potential of SMOS data for the generation of long-term data sets. The workshop will also cover common themes such as the quality of the Level 1 data products and calibration and validation activities.
The 2nd SMOS Science Conference will be preceded by a SMOS Training Course from 18 to 22 May 2015, organised by CESBIO and held as well at the ESA-ESAC premises near Madrid.
08 - 12 June 2015
The European Space Agency is organising, in the context of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) element, a conference on the topical theme of atmosphere. The conference will be held at the University of Crete (Greece - Heraklion) from 08 to 12 June 2015.
The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for scientists to present results from their ongoing research using data from past and current atmospheric instruments like ERS-2, Envisat, Metop and ESA Third Party Missions. Furthermore this conference is dedicated to prepare for the scientific exploitation of the Sentinel-5 Precursor mission.
