Mission teams at ESA's ESOC operations centre in Germany handed control of the recently launched MetOp-C satellite to Eumetsat, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, on Saturday morning, just three days after launch.

In the context of the EO Science for Society Programme Element, the European Space Agency is organising ATMOS 2018, a conference on the topical theme Atmosphere aimed at exploiting data from ESA and EO Missions for science and application development.
The purpose of this conference is to provide scientists and data users with the opportunity to present first-hand and up-to-date results from their ongoing research and application development activities by using data from past and current atmospheric instruments like Sentinel-5P, Aeolus, ERS-2, Envisat, Metop, and ESA Third Party Missions. Another aspect will be on discussing activities regarding future missions.
The conference will be held in Salzburg (Austria) from 26 to 29 November 2018. The outcome of this conference will help to further shape the next generation of R&D activities in the frame of ESA's Earth Observation Programme.
10 - 14 December
Contributions are welcome for the special Swarm session that will be held at the 2018 AGU Fall Meeting, taking place from 10 to 14 December in Washington DC, USA. The session is named "New and Emerging Magnetosphere-IOnosphere-Thermosphere Coupling Science from Remote and In Situ Spacecraft Measurements: The First 5 Years of Swarm".
The Swarm constellation recently became a quartet with the addition of the CASSIOPE Enhanced Polar Outflow Probe (e-POP); which is referred to as Swarm-E. Since their launch in the Fall of 2013, Swarm and Swarm-E have formed the vanguard of remote and in-situ diagnostics of the coupled Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere (MIT) system. As a quartet, Swarm will enable new insight into MIT coupling processes and wave-particle interactions across multiple spatiotemporal scales.

The upcoming AGU Fall Meeting 2018 Conference runs Monday to Friday from 10 to 14 December 2018, in Washington DC, USA.
Quite noteworthy for the SMOS User community, the session "The global water cycle: linkages of ocean salinity with the atmosphere and terrestrial hydrology" highlights water cycle research that describes linkages between the ocean, atmosphere, and land hydrology.
Contributions are invited on all aspects of water cycle research including analyses undertaken using in situ and remote observations from current (e.g., SMAP, SMOS, GRACE, GPM, GCOM-W), past (e.g., Aquarius, TRMM), and future (e.g., SWOT, GRACE-FO) satellite missions, estimates based on numerical models, data assimilation systems, and climate model projections. Particularly welcome are contributions that consider multiple realms (the ocean, atmosphere, land surface and subsurface), and provide compelling evidence for linkages between these, describing coherent water cycle variability and change.
11 - 13 December
The MED 2018 consultation meeting is planned from 11-13 December and will take place at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy. The aim of the meeting is to define a roadmap for a Mediterranean initiative within ESA's EO Science for Society Programme Element, encompassing topics such as atmosphere, oceanography, climate and land research and applications.

The 2019 Conference on Big Data from Space (BiDS'19) 'Turning Data into Insights', takes place on 19-21 February 2019 in Alte Kongresshalle, Munich, Germany.
The BiDS'19 Conference is co-organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, and the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen).
Big Data from Space refers to the massive spatio-temporal Earth and Space observation data collected by a variety of sensors - ranging from ground based to space-borne - and the synergetic use of data coming from other sources and communities.

This International Network follows a series of events addressing remote sensing of vegetation fluorescence. With the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) –Sentinel-3 tandem mission in its implementation phase and fluorescence measurements becoming increasingly available from missions like OCO-2 and Sentinel-5 P, the network will focus on latest developments in fluorescence remote sensing.
This includes fluorescence retrievals and atmospheric correction, product validation using ground and airborne instrumentation, and applications covering modeling at different spatial scales and data assimilation.
In addition, we encourage contributions related to research and applications over coastal and inland waters. The International Network is open to all scientists and engineers interested in exploring the new observation capabilities and synergies provided by the FLEX and the Sentinel-3 mission. The total number of participants is limited.
13 - 17 May 2019
ESA is pleased to invite you to participate in the 2019 Living Planet Symposium. The event, held every three years, will take place on 13–17 May 2019 at the MiCo Milano Congressi in Milan, Italy. The Symposium is organised with the support of the Italian Space Agency.
The Living Planet Symposium 2019 promises to be bigger and wider ranging than ever before. The event will not only see scientists present their latest findings on Earth's environment and climate derived from satellite data, but will also focus on Earth observation's role in building a sustainable future and a resilient society.
Participants will also be able to explore how emerging technologies are revolutionising the use of Earth observation, creating new opportunities for public and private sector interactions, and how business and the economy can benefit from this new epoch.
