Fogo, Cabo Verde

ATMOS 2018

26 - 29 November 2018

In the context of the EO Science for Society Programme Element, the European Space Agency is organising ATMOS 2018, a conference on the topical theme Atmosphere aimed at exploiting data from ESA and EO Missions for science and application development.

The purpose of this conference is to provide scientists and data users with the opportunity to present first-hand and up-to-date results from their ongoing research and application development activities by using data from past and current atmospheric instruments like Sentinel-5P, Aeolus, ERS-2, Envisat, Metop, and ESA Third Party Missions. Another aspect will be on discussing activities regarding future missions.

The conference will be held in Salzburg (Austria) from 26 to 29 November 2018. The outcome of this conference will help to further shape the next generation of R&D activities in the frame of ESA's Earth Observation Programme.

Swarm session at the AGU Fall Meeting 2018

10 - 14 December

Contributions are welcome for the special Swarm session that will be held at the 2018 AGU Fall Meeting, taking place from 10 to 14 December in Washington DC, USA. The session is named "New and Emerging Magnetosphere-IOnosphere-Thermosphere Coupling Science from Remote and In Situ Spacecraft Measurements: The First 5 Years of Swarm".

The Swarm constellation recently became a quartet with the addition of the CASSIOPE Enhanced Polar Outflow Probe (e-POP); which is referred to as Swarm-E. Since their launch in the Fall of 2013, Swarm and Swarm-E have formed the vanguard of remote and in-situ diagnostics of the coupled Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere (MIT) system. As a quartet, Swarm will enable new insight into MIT coupling processes and wave-particle interactions across multiple spatiotemporal scales.

Session 'The global water cycle' at the AGU Fall Meeting 2018

10 - 14 December 2018

The upcoming AGU Fall Meeting 2018 Conference runs Monday to Friday from 10 to 14 December 2018, in Washington DC, USA.

Quite noteworthy for the SMOS User community, the session "The global water cycle: linkages of ocean salinity with the atmosphere and terrestrial hydrology" highlights water cycle research that describes linkages between the ocean, atmosphere, and land hydrology.

Contributions are invited on all aspects of water cycle research including analyses undertaken using in situ and remote observations from current (e.g., SMAP, SMOS, GRACE, GPM, GCOM-W), past (e.g., Aquarius, TRMM), and future (e.g., SWOT, GRACE-FO) satellite missions, estimates based on numerical models, data assimilation systems, and climate model projections. Particularly welcome are contributions that consider multiple realms (the ocean, atmosphere, land surface and subsurface), and provide compelling evidence for linkages between these, describing coherent water cycle variability and change.

MED 2018

11 - 13 December

The MED 2018 consultation meeting is planned from 11-13 December and will take place at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy. The aim of the meeting is to define a roadmap for a Mediterranean initiative within ESA's EO Science for Society Programme Element, encompassing topics such as atmosphere, oceanography, climate and land research and applications.

 

The objectives of the event are:

  • To review the main requirements from geo-information in the region from science to information services;
  • To review the main activities, projects and initiatives taking place in the region where EO may contribute;
  • To assess the potential of the increasing observation capacity offered by satellites to address the needs for science, applications and future information services;
  • To discuss and agree on a number of key priority areas and requirements for research and development activities that may address the science and applications needs of a wide range of user sectors in the region;
  • To prepare a roadmap to be implemented in the ESA EO Science for society programme element.

5th Advanced Course on Radar Polarimetry 2019

22 - 25 January 2019

The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising the 5th Advanced Course on Radar Polarimetry dedicated to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit dual and fully polarimetric data for science and applications development.

The event will be hosted at ESA ESRIN, Frascati (Rome), Italy. The main objectives of the course are to:

  • Train the next generation of European and Canadian Principal Investigators (PIs)
  • Explain theoretical principles, processing algorithms, data products and their use in various applications
  • Introduce available tools and methods for the exploitation of dual and fully polarimetric data
  • Provide first-hand and up-to-date information on the state of the art in Radar Polarimetry, Polarimetric SAR Interferometry and SAR Tomography.

POLinSAR 2019

28 January - 1 February 2019

The European Space Agency is organising POLinSAR 2019, the 9th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry, to be hosted in ESRIN, Frascati, Italy from 28 January to 01 February 2019.

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Provide a forum for scientific exchange
  • Present the latest exploitation results from full-pol airborne and spaceborne systems and assess the state-of-the-art
  • Review retrieved bio-geophysical parameters and their accuracy
  • Make recommendations for algorithm development and new products
  • Support the preparation for ESA and Third Parties full-pol missions exploitation (BIOMASS, NOVASAR-S, RCM, SAOCOM, TerraSAR-L etc.)
  • Present innovative polarimetric applications and ideas for future polarimetric mission concepts
  • Report on the status of POLinSAR 2017 recommendations.

World Ocean Circulation User Consultation Meeting 2019

21 - 22 February 2019

A user consultation meeting is planned to take place on 21 and 22 February 2019 at ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, to prepare a roadmap for new initiatives on ocean circulation research and applications to be implemented in the ESA EO Science for Society programme element.


The world ocean circulation is the engine allowing energy, heat, momentum, chemicals and floating materials ranging from living resources to marine pollution to be transported over large distance around the Earth. The accurate knowledge of the ocean circulation at all time and space scales is becoming increasingly importance to many scientific, operational and commercial applications.


A large variety of active and passive remote-sensing instruments are in orbit today, which measurements both provide indirect knowledge about ocean surface currents at various spatial and temporal scales, also representing a surface signature of the ocean interior dynamics.


All these data, used in synergy, constitute a wealth of information to advance our understanding and estimation of the upper layer of the World Ocean Circulation.

Conference on Big Data from Space - BiDS'19

The 2019 Conference on Big Data from Space (BiDS'19) 'Turning Data into Insights', takes place on 19-21 February 2019 in Alte Kongresshalle, Munich, Germany.

The BiDS'19 Conference is co-organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, and the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen).

Big Data from Space refers to the massive spatio-temporal Earth and Space observation data collected by a variety of sensors - ranging from ground based to space-borne - and the synergetic use of data coming from other sources and communities.

Fluorescence (FLEX) 2019

5 - 8 March 2019

This International Network follows a series of events addressing remote sensing of vegetation fluorescence. With the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) –Sentinel-3 tandem mission in its implementation phase and fluorescence measurements becoming increasingly available from missions like OCO-2 and Sentinel-5 P, the network will focus on latest developments in fluorescence remote sensing.

 

This includes fluorescence retrievals and atmospheric correction, product validation using ground and airborne instrumentation, and applications covering modeling at different spatial scales and data assimilation.

 

In addition, we encourage contributions related to research and applications over coastal and inland waters. The International Network is open to all scientists and engineers interested in exploring the new observation capabilities and synergies provided by the FLEX and the Sentinel-3 mission. The total number of participants is limited.

Living Planet Symposium 2019

13 - 17 May 2019

ESA is pleased to invite you to participate in the 2019 Living Planet Symposium. The event, held every three years, will take place on 13–17 May 2019 at the MiCo Milano Congressi in Milan, Italy. The Symposium is organised with the support of the Italian Space Agency.


Attracting thousands of scientists and data users, ESA's Living Planet Symposia are amongst the biggest Earth observation conferences in the world.

 

The Living Planet Symposium 2019 promises to be bigger and wider ranging than ever before. The event will not only see scientists present their latest findings on Earth's environment and climate derived from satellite data, but will also focus on Earth observation's role in building a sustainable future and a resilient society.

 

Participants will also be able to explore how emerging technologies are revolutionising the use of Earth observation, creating new opportunities for public and private sector interactions, and how business and the economy can benefit from this new epoch.
