In 1991 ESA launched ERS-1, shortly followed by ERS-2 (in 1995) and in 2002 by ENVISAT, the largest EO satellite ever launched. To date, the data provided by ESA has widely contributed to increase our knowledge and understanding of the planet Earth. The applications of all this data range, among others, from atmospheric sciences to oceanography, from glaciology to forestry, from deformation mapping through to climate change studies.
14 March 2012
An ESA-funded project to model sea ice dynamics using archived radar data from the Envisat and ERS missions has released its first validated datasets for the Arctic winters of 2004-11. Mapping sea ice displacement is key for climate research.

Earth Observation Events
20 - 22 March 2012
ESA and EUMETSAT are jointly organising a Workshop on Sentinel-3 Calibration and Validation planning which will be held in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
This meeting will present an overview and status of Sentinel-3 calibration and validation activities, review the Draft Sentinel-3 Calibration/Validation Plan (CVP), seek lessons learned feedback and inputs from previous R&D and operational missions. The calibration and validation community will provide Sentinel-3 teams with prioritized recommendations to ensure an effective and successful mission cal/val outcome.
Particular emphasis will be given to operational cal/val issues and associated activities.
18 - 22 June 2012
The European Space Agency and the Norwegian Space Centre are jointly organising the fourth SAR oceanography workshop, SEASAR 2012, entitled "Advances in SAR Oceanography", which is to be hosted in Tromso, Norway, from 18 to 22 June 2012.
The workshop is open to scientists and students in the field of SAR oceanography including ESA Principle Investigators and co-investigators, to users of data from future SAR missions like Sentinel-1 and Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM) and to representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industry.
27 - 28 June 2012
The aim of this first GlobTemperature User Consultation Meeting which will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, is to survey users' requirements for satellite land surface temperature information.
The other objective of this meeting is to explore the feasibility of meeting them with available data and techniques, and set a list of priority requirements to be addressed by a potential future GlobTemperature project.
24 - 29 September 2012
To mark the 20 year anniversary of the launch of ERS-1 and TOPEX/POSEIDON, ESA, in collaboration with the French Space Agency, CNES, organised a Symposium in Venice, Italy. This event was sponsored by other partner agencies and organisations supporting the development of altimetry.
15 - 19 October 2012
The European Space Agency, together with Eumetsat, is organising the 3rd MERIS/(A)ATSR and OCLI-SLSTR (Sentinel-3) Preparatory Workshop, which will be hosted in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, from 15 to 19 October 2012.
24 - 26 October 2012
The Eighth Conference on Image Information Mining will be held at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Oberpfaffenhofen, Munich, Germany in October 2012. The event is sponsored by European Image Information Mining Coordination Group (IIMCG) and the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). This year's conference focuses on Knowledge Discovery from Earth Observation Data. The main topics to be discussed during the conference are: image information mining, image semantic automatic annotation, multi modal and multi-sensor information extraction. The event is aimed at European Space agencies and organisations, aerospace industry and research centres.
