Is global warming hiding underwater?

07 February 2014

Satellite observations of global sea-surface temperature show that a 30-year upward trend has slowed down within the last 15 years. Climate scientists say this is not the end of global warming, but the result of a rearrangement in the energy flow of the climate system and, in particular, how the ocean stores heat.

Glowing plants a sign of health

12 February 2014

Radiant skin is considered a sign of good health in humans, but plants also glow when they are well. A potential new ESA satellite could use this fluorescence to track the health and productivity of vegetation worldwide.

Earth Observation Summer School - Earth System Monitoring and Modelling

04 - 14 August 2014

The European Space Agency (ESA) organises a series of summer schools on Monitoring of the Earth System to promote the exploitation of Earth Observation (EO) data across disciplines, with a specific focus on their assimilation into Earth System models.

The next two-week course will be held at ESA/ESRIN (Frascati, Italy) from 04 to 14 August 2014. It aims to provide students with an integrated end-to-end perspective going from measurement techniques to end-user applications.

Application submission deadline: 01 April 2014

EarthCARE Science Workshop

17 - 19 September 2014

The EarthCare Science Workshop will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from 17 to 19 September 2014. The workshop is organised by JAXA in cooperation with ESA. The quantitative representation of clouds, precipitation, aerosol and their radiative properties remains one of the main challenges for climate and weather prediction models. In response to this need, ESA has selected the Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite mission for implementation as the third Earth Explorer Core Mission in cooperation with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
