CryoSat 4th User Workshop

Since the start of operations, the CryoSat mission has been providing systematic data to the scientific community supported by validation and calibration activities to ensure high data quality. The 4th CryoSat Workshop, which will take place at the Living Planet Symposium 2016, is intended to provide a forum to present and discuss all topics related to the exploitation of the CryoSat mission and to identity novel scientific challenges.

Please note that the deadline for submitting abstracts is 16 October 2015.

Sentinel-2 catches eye of algal storm

The Sentinel-2A satellite has been in orbit for only a matter of weeks, but new images of an algal bloom in the Baltic Sea show that it is already exceeding expectations. Built essentially as a land monitoring mission, Sentinel-2 will also certainly find its way into marine applications.

ESA LPS 2016 - Abstract submission deadline is approaching

This is a kind reminder to all interested users about the approaching deadline for submitting abstracts to the Living Planet Symposium (LPS) 2016 organised by the European Space Agency (ESA).

The event will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 09 to 13 May 2016; the deadline for abstract submission is 16 October 2015.

Atchafalaya River, USA

Shown on this 100m Proba-V image of 15 October 2014 is the Atchafalaya River delta, with two small 'birdfoot' patterns visible. At these locations, the river deposits sand and clay particles and is the only location at the Louisianan coast that is gaining ground.

Earth Observation for Water Cycle Science 2015

20 - 23 October 2015

The European Space Agency is jointly organising, with GEWEX, a conference on the global water cycle. The conference will take place from 20 to 23 October 2015 at ESA-ESRIN, in Frascati, Italy.

The purpose of this topical conference is to review our knowledge on the water cycle science at different scales in space and time; to advocate for the development of robust satellite geo-information data products to characterise and model the water cycle from global to basin scales; and to foster the improvement of models and data assimilation systems to support local, regional and global water cycle predictions, climate change impacts and development of mitigation strategies in water resources management.

Mapping Urban Areas from Space (MUAS) 2015 conference

The European Space Agency is organising, in the context of the Data User Element (DUE) of the Earth Observation Envelope Programme (EOEP), a conference on Mapping Urban Areas from Space (MUAS) 2015. The conference will be held at ESA-ESRIN, in Frascati, Italy, from 04 to 05 November 2015.

The purpose of this conference is to provide scientists and data users with the opportunity to present first-hand and up-to-date results from their ongoing research and application development activities by using data from past and current satellites.

2nd GlobCurrent User Consultation Meeting (UCM)

04 - 06 November 2015

Following the 1st successful UCM held last year in Plymouth, UK, the Second GlobCurrent User Consultation Meeting will be held at IFREMER, Brest, France, from 04 to 06 November 2015.

This User Consultation Meeting offers an overview of the project progress and an opportunity to influence the future development through evaluation of preliminary products, clarification of user requirements and discussion of how the system will develop.

The meeting is open to International scientists, Industry and Institutions having an interest in Ocean Surface Current measurements from space, and will include a mix of plenary presentations, breakout groups and training activities focused on new products and services developed by the GlobCurrent Project.

Proba-V Symposium

26 - 28 January 2016

The European Space Agency (ESA) in cooperation with the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) is organising an event dedicated to the scientific and operational exploitation of Proba-V mission. The event, entitled "Proba-V Symposium", will be hosted in Ghent (Belgium), in the Mariott Hotel, from 26 to 28 January 2016. The Symposium is open to Proba-V users, scientists, students, representatives from national, European and international agencies, operational end-users and value adding industries.

The main objectives of the workshop are:

  • Gather and foster the Proba-V scientific and user community
  • Present the Proba-V mission status, calibration results, algorithms and products quality
  • Provide a forum for investigators to report and discuss results of on-going science activities using Proba-V data
  • Provide a forum for international exchange on land, inland/coastal water and cryosphere applications
  • Report on and promote the use of Proba-V data for downstream operational services
  • Consult scientists to formulate community recommendations for algorithm and products improvements

2016 Conference on Big Data from Space (BiDS)

15 - 17 March 2016

This conference, jointly organised by ESA, SatCen, and JRC, in collaboration with the IAC, PCTT and the Council of Tenerife, aims to bring together researchers, engineers, and users in the area of Big Data from Space.

The conference shall take place at the Auditorio de Tenerife, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, from 15 to 17 March 2016.

The focus is on the whole data lifecycle, ranging from data acquisition by space-borne and ground-based sensors to data management, analysis and exploitation, and on the Infrastructures and Services for Big Data. Contributions are invited to the Big Data from Space Conference on all the aspects related to data volume, velocity, variety, veracity and value.

Living Planet Symposium 2016

09 - 13 May 2016

The 2016 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 09 to 13 May 2016. It is organised with the support of the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic.

The event, which in 2013 attracted 1800 participants, will focus on the exploitation of satellite data in various thematic domains: Atmosphere, Oceanography, Cryosphere, Land, Hazards, Climate and Meteorology, Solid Earth/Geodesy, Near-Earth Environment, New Methodologies and Products, Open Science 2.0.

Earth Observation and Cryosphere Science 2016

10 - 13 May 2016

The Earth Observation and Cryosphere Science 2016 conference will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, from 10 to 13 May 2016. The event is jointly organised by the European Space Agency and the Climate and Cryosphere Project.

The purpose of this topical conference is to advance our knowledge on the potential offered by EO technology to answer some of the major open questions in cryosphere science; to review the latest developments on advanced EO-based geo-information data products addressing key cryosphere processes; and identify the major scientific requirements and challenges of the cryosphere scientific community for the coming years where EO may contribute.
