ESA's SMOS satellite has clocked up more than one billion kilometres orbiting Earth to improve our understanding of our planet's water cycle. Marking its fifth birthday, all the data collected over land and ocean have been drawn together to show how moisture in the soil and salinity in the ocean change over the year.

Following feedback from different user teams, the Swarm Mission Team has decided to improve the Swarm FTP dissemination server to better handle the fact that in the future the L1 and L2 Product Baselines may evolve separately per processor and per satellite depending on the improvements of the algorithms and the instruments' calibration.
This is to remind the Swarm data users that the FTP server layout change will be effective on Tuesday 11 November 2014, when the old directory structure will be replaced by the new one.

This cloud-free Proba-V 300 m image, acquired 27 September 2014, shows the Alps and northern Italy. In the upper part of the image you can see the Juran woods and northern Switzerland while the Italian lakes, with the famous Lake Garda, are also visible in the central part of the image.
Get involved in the new SCIDIP-ES (Science Data Infrastructure for Preservation - Earth Science) questionnaire, an online survey aimed at data managers, data producers and data users across a diverse range of Earth Science domains and organisations. Users wishing to participate are kindly invited to submit the questionnaire within the deadline of 14 November 2014.
Research and Service Support
06 November 2014
The InSAR SBAS service will be available from 10 November 2014, to interested RSS users for processing SAR data from the ESA archives. The service, based on the full P-SBAS DInSAR chain integrated by CNR-IREA and ESA RSS into the G-POD environment, requires dataset selection over a specific AOI together with parameters/thresholds setting, and allows unsupervised processing providing in output geocoded interferograms, mean deformation velocity maps and deformation time series.
Earth Observation Events
12 - 14 November 2014
The 2014 Conference on Big Data from Space (BiDS '14) took place from 12 to 14 November 2014 at ESA/ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
This conference, jointly organised by ESA, SatCen, and JRC, aimed to bring together researchers, engineers, and users in the area of Big Data in the Space sector. The focus is on the whole data lifecycle, ranging from data acquisition by spaceborne and ground-based sensors to data management, analysis and exploitation in the domains of Earth Observation, Space Science, Space Engineering, Space Weather, etc. Special emphasis is placed on highlighting synergies and cross-fertilisation opportunities from domains like Climate Change, Solid Earth Science, Planetary Sciences, Life Science, Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Social Sciences, etc.
The conference aims to contribute towards a common "Big Data from Space" scientific and programmatic framework; widen competences and expertise of universities, labs and industrial actors; foster networking of experts and users towards better access and sharing of data, tools and resources; leverage innovation, spin-in, spin off of technologies, and business development arising from research and industry progress.
10 - 12 December 2014
The European Space Agency, in the context of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) element INSARAP studies, is organising a technical workshop on Sentinel-1 TOPS interferometry. The workshop will be held at ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy from 10 to 12 December 2014.
The objectives of the workshop are to present Sentinel-1 interferometric results in TOPS mode, adapt InSAR and PSI processing techniques to TOPS SAR data, discuss the first InSAR and PSI results over selected pilot sites and assess the synergy between Sentinel-1 and previous C-band SAR missions. During the event, results obtained by the two InSARAP consortia will be presented.
Registration deadline: 01 December 2014
26 - 30 January 2015
The European Space Agency is jointly organising the 7th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry, POLinSAR 2015, and the 1st BIOMASS Science workshop. The workshops will be held in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy on the following dates:
The objectives of the workshops are to provide a forum for exchange on the latest advances and research in SAR polarimetry and to gather a scientific community for ESA's future BIOMASS mission.
10 - 13 February 2015
The ADM-Aeolus Science and Cal/Val Workshop will take place at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, from 10 to 13 February 2015.
The objective of the workshop is to bring scientists and Cal/Val Principle Investigators (PI) together at ESA to present and discuss the upcoming ADM-Aeolus mission and its products, science applications and Calibration and Validation aspects. Furthermore, the scientific community are invited to present their plans for the use of the Aeolus data and to start getting familiar with the expected products and product quality.
18 - 19 March 2015
The European Space Agency is organising, in the context of the Data User Element (DUE) programme, a conference on Mapping Water Bodies from Space - MWBS 2015. The conference will be held at ESA-ESRIN (Frascati, Italy) on the 18 and 19 of March 2015.
The purpose of this conference is to provide scientists and data users with the opportunity to present first-hand and up-to-date results from their ongoing research and application development activities by using data from past and current satellites. The outcome of this conference will help to further shape the next generation of R&D activities in the frame of ESA's Earth Observation Programme.
