With increasing levels of greenhouse gases causing our climate to change, it is important to understand exactly where these gases come from and how they disperse in the atmosphere. A recent field campaign has shown that a potential new satellite could provide the answers.
Researchers from three continents gathered at ESA's technical heart in the Netherlands for the inaugural Alcantara initiative workshop - fostering cooperation between research groups in Europe and those beyond, to jointly tackle key knowledge gaps in space research.
Earth Observation Events
05 - 07 March 2014
The Ninth Conference on Image Information Mining will be held at the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) in Bucharest, Romania from 05 to 07 March 2014. The event is sponsored by the Image Information Mining Coordination Group (IIMCG) and the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). The focus of this year's conference is: The Sentinels Era.
The main topics to be discussed during the conference are: image information mining, image semantic automatic annotation, multi modal and multi-sensor information extraction. The event is aimed at European space agencies and organisations, aerospace industry and research centres, value added companies and service providers.
Registration is open
27 April - 02 May 2014
The EGU General Assembly 2014 will be held at the ACV centre in Vienna, Austria, from 27 April to 02 May 2014. The event will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. Especially for young scientists, it is the aim of the EGU to provide a forum where they can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geosciences. See in particular the session dedicated to SMOS.
20 - 22 May 2014
The European Space Agency, in the context of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) element, is organising an event dedicated to prepare for scientific exploitation of the Sentinel-2 mission, entitled "Sentinel-2 for Science Workshop", which will be hosted in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, from 20 to 22 May 2014.
The workshop is open to ESA Principal Investigators, co-investigators, Sentinel-2 users, scientists, students, representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industries.
02 - 10 August 2014
The 40th COSPAR Scientific Assembly will be held in Moscow, Russia from 02 to 10 August 2014 and is organised by Lomonsov Moscow State University.
The Assembly features a broad range of topics and aims to promote research in subjects including Earth observation, planetology, astrophysics, astronomy, space science, space biology and medicine. A number of panels on related subjects, including training courses and special events, will also take place during the Assembly.
Approximately 2500 scientists and engineers from across the world will present the latest results in 119 symposia.
Extended early registration deadline: 31 May 2014
04 - 14 August 2014
The European Space Agency (ESA) organises a series of summer schools on Monitoring of the Earth System to promote the exploitation of Earth Observation (EO) data across disciplines, with a specific focus on their assimilation into Earth System models.
The next two-week course will be held at ESA/ESRIN (Frascati, Italy) from 04 to 14 August 2014. It aims to provide students with an integrated end-to-end perspective going from measurement techniques to end-user applications.
Application submission deadline: 01 April 2014
08 - 12 September 2014
As part of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) programme element, the European Space Agency (ESA) organises each year an advanced Land Training Course devoted to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit data from ESA and operational EO Missions for science and applications development.
17 - 19 September 2014
The EarthCare Science Workshop will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from 17 to 19 September 2014. The workshop is organised by JAXA in cooperation with ESA. The quantitative representation of clouds, precipitation, aerosol and their radiative properties remains one of the main challenges for climate and weather prediction models. In response to this need, ESA has selected the Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite mission for implementation as the third Earth Explorer Core Mission in cooperation with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
26 - 28 November 2014
Ocean Salinity Science & Salinity Remote Sensing Workshop will be held at Met Office, Exeter, United Kingdom from 26 to 28 November 2014. The 3 day workshop is an open meeting to review progress and future priorities for measuring ocean salinity.
The focus of this workshop will be: To review progress made in using Ocean Salinity data (SSS and subsurface), to identify scientific challenges and benefits of using satellite SSS data in the wider ocean community in synergy with other data sources (in situ, satellite, model); and thus, to foster the use of the new SSS data from space in the wider ocean and climate science communities.
26 - 30 January 2015
The European Space Agency is jointly organising the 7th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry, POLinSAR 2015, and the 1st BIOMASS Science workshop. The workshops will be held in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy on the following dates:
The objectives of the workshops are to provide a forum for exchange on the latest advances and research in SAR polarimetry and to gather a scientific community for ESA's future BIOMASS mission.
