Earth observation measurements shouldn't be taken with a pinch of salt. ESA is comparing readings of sea-surface salinity from drifting floats to confirm the SMOS water mission's measurements.
G-POD is a partnership opportunity for conducting Earth Science research activities through the use of the ESA Earth Observation (EO) Grid Processing-on-Demand (G-POD) environment, part of the ESA Research and Service Support service.
Within this framework, ESA opens the G-POD SMOS permanent call for proposals.

The use of data from Earth-observing satellites in the insurance business is still in the early stages, but pressure to be ready for more frequent extreme-weather events is increasing.
As our quest for knowledge about our planet grows, so does the need for novel technologies to offer new insight into the changing face of Earth. Researchers are excited about the potential of a new radar wavelength to image Earth from space.
Third Party Missions - GRACE
04 October 2012
Additionally to the GRACE accelerometer Instrument Control Units (see news of 27 September 2012), also the GRACE Microwave Assemblies (MWA) had to be switched-off on both satellites on 02 October at 12:00 UTC in order to further reduce the load on the batteries.
Image of the Week
This false-colour Landsat image from 4 May shows agricultural structures in the US state of Kansas.
The Midwestern state’s agricultural outputs include cattle, sheep, wheat, soybeans, cotton, corn and salt. Kansas is also one of the top ten states in US oil production.
Earth Observation Events
11 - 12 October 2012
The Workshop 'Models for scientific exploitation of EO Data' brings together data and mission owners, research institutions and scientists, to outline the new trends and models able to close the gap between missions, data and the Earth System challenges the scientists want to address. The Workshop will be held on 11-12 October 2012 at ESA/ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
16 - 17 October 2012
The First International GOCE Solid Earth Workshop will take place at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente, Enschede (The Netherlands) on 16-17 October 2012 and is fully sponsored by ESA.
The goal of this 2-day workshop is to provide training on the usage of GOCE data as well as to present the latest scientific results.
24 - 26 October 2012
The Eighth Conference on Image Information Mining will be held at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Oberpfaffenhofen, Munich, Germany in October 2012. The event is sponsored by European Image Information Mining Coordination Group (IIMCG) and the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). This year's conference focuses on Knowledge Discovery from Earth Observation Data. The main topics to be discussed during the conference are: image information mining, image semantic automatic annotation, multi modal and multi-sensor information extraction. The event is aimed at European Space agencies and organisations, aerospace industry and research centres.
07 - 08 November 2012
The next GlobWave User Meeting will be held on 07-08 November 2012 at the European Maritime Safety Agency in Lisbon, Portugal.
This meeting is a unique opportunity for users of satellite wave data from altimeter and SAR instruments to exchange recent results and to engage with the GlobWave project team to discuss data usage and future requirements. Oral and poster presentations are welcome.
Registration deadline: 21 October 2012
08 - 09 November 2012
The European Space Agency is hosting the 1st International 'Ka-Band Earth Observation Radar Missions' Workshop from 8 to 9 November 2012 at ESTEC, Noordwijk, Netherlands.
The objectives of the workshop are to review the-state-of-the-art in current and future Ka-Band mission concepts including science objectives and mission design.
The Workshop is open to all interested in the applications and implementation of Ka-Band, Earth Observation missions within the industry, research organisations, Agencies and potential users of the unique capabilities of such missions.
Paper submission deadline: 05 October 2012
21 - 25 January 2013
The 2nd Advanced Course on Radar Polarimetry will be held in ESA/ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
The course will provide a substantial and balanced introduction to the basics and advanced concepts of theory, scattering concepts, systems and applications typical of radar polarimetric remote sensing, as well as hands-on computing exercises on PolSAR and Pol-InSAR data processing for remote sensing applications
28 January - 01 February 2013
The 6th International Workshop on Science and Applications of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry, POLinSAR 2013, will be hosted in ESRIN, Frascati, Italy. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for scientific exchange to present results and progress in the fields of SAR Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry. The Symposium is open to ESA Principal Investigators, scientists, students, future SAR missions users, representatives from space agencies and value adding industries.
Submission of full paper deadline: 15 February 2013
12 - 14 March 2013
The Third CryoSat user workshop will be held in Dresden, Germany, from 12 to 14 March 2013.
This workshop is intended to provide a forum to present and discuss all topics related to the exploitation of the CryoSat mission and to identify novel scientific challenges.
The workshop is open to all scientists with an interest in the CryoSat mission and its data products.
Registration deadline: 22 January 2013
09 - 13 September 2013
The 2013 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium follows the previous successful symposia held in Bergen (2010), Montreux (2007) and Salzburg (2004). The event will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom from 09 to 13 September 2013 and is organised with the support of the UK Space Agency.
The aim of the Symposium is to present the results of ESA EO missions exploitation by providing a forum for investigators to report and discuss results of on-going science activities.
