Typhoon Hagibis

11 October 2019

Web Content Image

Typhoon Hagibis is headed towards Japan's main island of Honshu, where it is expected to make landfall over the weekend. Japan is bracing for potential damage from strong winds and torrential rain.

This enormous typhoon, which is being compared to a Category 5 hurricane, can be seen in this image captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission on 10 October at 01:00 GMT (10:00 Japan Standard Time). The eye of the storm has a diameter of approximately 60 km.

EOhopS – open again!

11 October 2019

Explore hosted processing and get free commercial EO data, software and analytics for your research project.

eohops banner

ESA is pleased to announce the extension of the EOhopS opportunity for researchers who want to explore the benefits of hosted processing and the use of commercial EO data, remote sensing software and analytics for their projects.

The EOhopS Store and EOhopS hosted environment is operated by cloudeo. It not only gives a good overview of all the available resources for the project, but also connects to a powerful backend, simplifying the whole administration process. Together with the new concept of time license for EO data and software, less budget is spent on the administration and more budget is available to support research with high-quality commercial imagery and software.

Through the last EOhopS opportunity researchers already took advantage of fast access to EO data and readily installed software on their hosted environment, the Workbench for Science. Without any need for the additional budget, they could apply their analytics on a large variety of commercial data sets, understand hosted processing capabilities and potential limitations.

With the launch of this EOhopS 2.0 all new applicants will benefit in addition from the enhanced offering on the Workbench for Science for their interactive and automated geoprocessing, a larger selection of data sets and analytics and many other platform developments making the hosted processing even more convenient.

Now applying for a project is easy. Please follow the steps in the diagram below:eohops process

SNAP release 7.0.0 available online

11 October 2019

The latest version of the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) v7.0.0 is available on the STEP website. Installers can be found on the SNAP download webpage.

The ESA Sentinel toolboxes support the scientific exploitation for the ERS-ENVISAT missions, the Copernicus Sentinels 1, 2 and 3 missions and a range of National and Third Party missions.

Additional toolboxes are also available for ESA's SMOS and Proba-V missions, all sharing the SNAP common architecture.

Lake Natron, Tanzania

The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over two saline lakes in East Africa: the larger Lake Natron in northern Tanzania and the smaller Lake Magadi, just over the border in Kenya.

Lake Natron is around 60 km long and is fed mainly by the Ewaso Ng'iro River. Despite its dark colour in this image, Lake Natron is often bright red owing to the presence of microorganisms that feed on the salts of the water.

The saline waters make the lake inhospitable for many plants and animals, yet the surrounding salt water marshes are a surprising habitat for flamingos. In fact, the lake is home to the highest concentrations of lesser and greater flamingos in East Africa, where they feed on spirulina – a green algae with red pigments.

The extinct Gelai Volcano, standing at 2942 m tall, is visible southeast of the lake.

The pink-coloured waters of Lake Magadi can also be seen at the top of the image. The lake is over 30 km long and has a notably high salt content, and in some places the salt is up to 40 metres thick. The mineral trona can also be found in the lake's waters. This mineral is collected and used for glass manufacturing, fabric dyeing and paper production.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 is a two-satellite mission to supply the coverage and data delivery needed for Europe's Copernicus programme. The mission's frequent revisits over the same area and high spatial resolution allow changes in inland water bodies to be closely monitored.
