CryoSat Ice Baseline-D data sample and updated documentation available

Following the successful CryoSat Quality Working Group Meeting held from 26 to 28 November 2018, the upcoming CryoSat Ice Baseline-D data products have been further refined.

The Baseline-D ice chain will be transferred to operation on 27 May 2019 and will include several evolutions as well as a new data format (NetCDF).

A sample dataset has been made available, in order to allow you to update tools and reading routines prior to the final official products release.

The Baseline-D test dataset covers 12 November 2013 and is available for:

  • Level 1 (SIR_LRM_1b, SIR_SAR_1b and SIR_SIN_1b)
  • Level 2 (SIR_LRM_2_, SIR_SAR_2_ and SIR_SIN_2_)

In addition, the final and consolidated version of the L1b and L2 product format specification, and Summary of evolution document are also available for download.

Earth Day - Thinking about our Globe

Each year, on the 22nd of April we celebrate Earth Day to raise awareness on humankind's impact on the Earth's resources, such as climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, and trafficking and poaching. 

In days of a heated climate change debate and to provide planning and decision making support, objective, consistent, and quality-assured data and information about the various biospheres' state is of vital importance.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) implemented the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) to generate Climate Data Records (CDRs) of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) using multiple satellite, in-situ, and re-analyses of climate models and their projections. The C3S Land Biosphere component uses Proba-V data to generate the longest possible, consistent, and mature satellite-based biosphere ECVs.

An example of such a long-term consistent biosphere satellite data record is shown in the animation below. It presents for 2018 the monthly Leaf Area Index (LAI) anomaly (deviation) over Europe from the 1998 – 2017 average using harmonized SPOT-VGT and Proba-V observations.

The image below shows the impact of the the 2018 summer drought in which vegetation gradually dried out, resulting in lower LAI (indicated by the red areas) than the 1998 – 2017 average.

Landsat 8 web portal moving to new environment

24 April 2019

The Landsat 8 portal will be moved to a new environment on 2 May 2019. After the transfer to operations, the portal shall remain at its current URL.

During the migration users may experience problems accessing the web portal.
