Seventh Sentinel satellite launched for Copernicus

The second Sentinel-3 satellite, Copernicus Sentinel-3B, was launched on 25 April, joining its identical twin Sentinel-3A in orbit. This pairing of satellites increases coverage and data delivery for the European Union's Copernicus environment programme.

ESA through its Earthnet Third Party Mission (TPM) programme is launching an ad-hoc call for  R&D applications with high resolution Digital Surface Model (DSM) products based on CartoSat-1 data.

The call for proposals is now open and will close on 25 May 2018.

ESA EO Φ-week - Abstract submission deadline extended

The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising a Φ-week event at ESRIN in Frascati, Italy from 22 to 26 October 2018. The event will focus on EO Open Science and FutureEO - to review the latest developments in Open Science trends and kick-start innovative activities of the recently created Φ-department. This new department is looking at FutureEO, and its associated Φ-lab aims to identify, support and scale bold EO ideas.

Swarm tracks elusive ocean magnetism

The magnetic field is arguably one of the most mysterious features of our planet. ESA's Swarm mission is continually yielding more insight into how our protective shield is generated, how it behaves and how it is changing. Adding yet another string to its bow, Swarm is now tracking changes in the magnetic field produced in the oceans in more detail than ever before.

New Swarm Level 2 magnetic field models released

09 April 2018

The first models of the fourth release of Swarm magnetic field models are now available to users. The new models are based on improved Swarm magnetometer data (MAGx_LR_1B data products, baseline 05, version 03), covering the period from launch to the end of 2017, i.e. one additional year in comparison to the previous release.

8th Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing

The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising an event for Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing, dedicated to training the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit data from EO missions (e.g. the Copernicus Sentinels) for science and applications development.

Antarctica loses grip

ESA's CryoSat mission has revealed that, over the last seven years, Antarctica has lost an area of underwater ice the size of Greater London. This is because warm ocean water beneath the continent's floating margins is eating away at the ice attached to the seabed.
