    ESA and ICEYE are pleased to announce the opportunity to freely access, up to the end of the year, ICEYE imagery over several demonstration sites, to assess image quality and suitability for several applications: monitoring urban, agricultural and forest environments, and vessel tracking (ship detection).

    ESA promotes this opportunity as a data familiarisation phase before the potential formal integration into the Third Party Mission programme of the ESA Earthnet activities.

    Altogether, four demonstration sites with SAR imagery acquired in Stripmap imaging mode are offered for the data quality assessment focusing on several potential applications such as urban, agricultural and forest area monitoring, and vessel tracking.

    The urban test site is represented by Houston metropolitan area. This city is one of the most populous in the United States, conveniently located on the gulf coastal plain. Much of the city was built on forested land, marshes, swamp, or prairie. The scene was acquired on 02 February 2018, with central coordinates 29°49'12"N 95°13'12"W.

    The agricultural test site is represented by an intensively managed suburban cropland area located on the seaside in south-eastern China. The test site features mixed agricultural and vegetated areas along with district settlements of the city of Shantou, on the eastern coast of Guangdong. The data take was performed on 02 March 2018. Central coordinates are 23°18'36"N 116°33'00"E.

    The forested monitoring application is represented by a test site located in South Eastern Asia, on eastern part of the Island of Sumatra, Indonesia, and features mostly rainforest area along with several palm tree plantations. Central coordinates are 0°18'59"N 102°54'36"E. The site is covered primarily by broadleaf evergreen forest but features several actively managed plantation areas and, to a lesser extent, cropland. The area is characterised by near permanent cloud cover making it nearly impossible to monitor forest activities and change detection with optical satellite instruments. The scene was acquired on 01 March 2018.

    Vessel tracking area. This test site (central coordinates 1°03'36"N 103°54'00"E) includes the Port of Singapore, Singapore Strait and partly Riau Archipelago, thus covering the world's busiest shipping lane. The scene acquired on 10 February 2018, might provide an insight on suitability and potential of the ICEYE stripmap imagery for monitoring vessels and updating maritime status information.

    How to access this data
    The data will be accessible directly via the ICEYE delivery system, following registration on their platform.
    Processing level

    In the framework of the data familiarisation phase, ORTHO products are available.

    This product is represented by a single Geotiff file that contains information about backscatter amplitude from each ground resolution cell, projected into a map coordinate system, compatible with modern GIS toolchains.

    Measurement data:

    • 16bit integer values in linear scale, scaled to match the dynamic range of the acquisition.
    • Raster is in map projected pixels. Default projection is geodetic, EPSG: 4326.
    • Geotiff header contains information of the location and orientation of the raster in geographic coordinates.
