Pleiades image of earthquakes in Iran
This Pléiades optical satellite image shows Ahar, Iran, on 17 August 2012, almost a week after two powerful earthquakes struck northwest Iran on 11 August.
Almost 300 people were killed in the earthquakes, measuring 6.4 and 6.3 on the Richter Scale, and thousands more injured. Some remote villages were also destroyed, leaving many homeless.
The International Charter: Space and Major Disasters was activated for this event; to provide imagery and analysis for relief efforts.
