This SPOT-4 image shows the Mateev-Kurgan District, in the Rostov Region of Russia, and was acquired on 23 November 2012.
Matveev-Kurgan District is located on the western part of Rostov Region and borders with Donetsk region, Ukraine. Matveev Kurgan village is the administrative centre of the district. It was established at the end of 18th Century.
According to legend the village was named after the chieftain of gangsters, living in the surroundings.
The Mius River can be seen on the image, which runs through the territory of Ukraine and Russia and falls into Mius lagoon of the Taganrog bay (Azov Sea).
