Minimize Kostomuksha, Russia

This SPOT-5 image, acquired 11 March 2013, shows the city of Kostomuksha and the surrounding area, in Russia.

The city of Kostomuksha can be seen in the upper left part of the image. It is located in the north-west of the Karelia highlands. It was built on the place of the old Karelian village Kostomuksha on the eastern shore of the Kontokkiyarvi lake. The status of a city was assigned to it in 1983.

Kostomuksha is related to Far North regions, with about 30,000 citizens.

The distance between Kostomuksha and Petrozavodsk is 490 km. The Russian-Finnish border is 35 km away. From 2007 Kostomuksha is no longer included in the boundary zone. The trans-border "Kostomukshsky" nature reserve can also be seen on the image. In 1998 this nature reserve was awarded with a diploma of the European Council for successful biodiversity conservation.
