Thomas worked on inverse modelling of the atmospheric transport of carbon dioxide first at MPI for Meteorology in Hamburg and later at MPI for Biogeochemistry in Jena. He then joined Arthur Andersen's Financial and Commodities Risk Consulting Pracise in Frankfurt and founded FastOpt in Hamburg, which he runs and owns together with his partner, Ralf Giering.

One of Thomas's main occupations is the set up and operation of  inverse models and data assimilation systems, based on code for efficient evaluation of derivatives.

Other interests include design of aerodynamic shapes and computational finance.
