Torrential rains which began in November have caused rivers to burst their banks along Peru's Andean Ridge and flood nearby towns and villages. At least 14 people have been reported killed as a result of the flooding, and an estimated 5000 people have been affected by the disaster. At least 800 homes have been destroyed by the flood waters, forcing many to seek refuge in shelters.
