Kuala Lumpur, officially the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, or commonly known as KL, is the national capital of Malaysia as well as its largest city. It is among the fastest growing metropolitan regions in South-East Asia, in both population and economic development. Kuala Lumpur is the cultural, financial and economic centre of Malaysia and home to the Parliament of Malaysia, and the official residence of the Malaysian King (Yang di-Pertuan Agong), the Istana Negara.

Kuala Lumpur is one of three Federal Territories of Malaysia, enclaved within the state of Selangor, on the central west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Since the 1990s, the city has played host to many international sporting, political and cultural events including the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Kuala Lumpur has undergone rapid development in recent decades, and is now the eighth most visited city in the world.

Kuala Lumpur has been ranked by the Economist Intelligence Unit Global Liveability Ranking at No. 70 out of 140 global cities, and second in Southeast Asia after Singapore at No. 35. Forbes has also named Kuala Lumpur at No. 6 in its list of 10 best cities to retire abroad, and the best in Asia, with factors including world class healthcare, affordable cost of living and widely spoken English. Kuala Lumpur was named as one of the New7Wonders Cities.

As part of our world tour in 2018, let's visit the city of Kuala Lumpur (visible in top left part of the images). Kuala Lumpur is the focal point of Malaysia. The city offers many attractions and a versatile and fascinating landscape. In only 150 years Kuala Lumpur has eveolved from marshland, into a cosmopolitan capital.

Today, the streets are full of modern office buildings, elegant shopping centers and lively night clubs, projecting the city of Malaysia into the future. In addition, the British colonial buildings are still present in the city, recalling the city's past.

The modern profile of this metropolis is dominated by the Petronas Towers, a pair of 451 m high skyscrapers, made of glass and steel with Islamic motifs. Inside the towers there are a suspension bridge and an observation point. In the city there are also monuments from the British colonial era, such as the railway station and the Sultan Abdul Samad Palace.

Around the Federal territoyy of Kuala Lampur (see the image acquired by Sentinel-2 in optical sensor), are visible the city of Petaling Jaya, major Malaysian city originally developed as a satellite township for Kuala Lumpur. It is located in the Petaling District of Selangor and Putrajaya city, situated to south of Kuala Lampur and today new Administrative Federal Center of Malaysia.
