Minimize Fires in Spain

Wildfire have left 45 people dead in Portugal and Spain in October, but rain brought respite on 17 October (From AFP). Across the border in Galicia, Spain's westernmost province which flanks northern Portugal, the number of dead rose to four from fires which also broke out on Sunday and were stoked by warm winds as Hurricane Ophelia passed the Iberian Peninsula. The latest victim was a 70-year-old man who died on Monday in Vigo, a city on the coast. On Tuesday, officials said they had lowered the alert level after early morning rain and calmer winds halted the progression of the flames.

Fire in Spain
Overlay image acquired by Landsat 8 OLI

This new Landsat-8 imagery acquired over the area North-East of Vigo last week, shows the four areas of forest affected by fires. This comparison was created with a combination of natural and false colour bands. In this comparison, the users can see that the active areas are visible in plum and the areas destroyed by fire are visible in brown.

Another aim of these images is to promote the opportunity to download Landsat data through the ESA portals, where images captured every day are made available in near real time to the users and the scientific community.
