ESA is offering free online access to the EO community , to JERS-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar and Optical data, acquired systematically, based on an agreement between ESA and NASDA.
The following product types are available:

  • JERS-1 SAR Level 1 Precision Image (JSA_PRI_1P)
  • JERS-1 SAR Level 1 Single Look Complex Image (JSA_SLC_1P)
  • JERS-1 Optical VNIR Level 1 System Corrected Products (OPS_SYC_1P)

Access is granted immediately to all users after fast registration

Any publication of results obtained from the use of ESA JERS-1 data shall be accompanied by an appropriate credit to JAXA, as follows: "© JAXA (year of acquisition)". Further information can be found in the ESA TPM Terms & Conditions.

ESA is offering free of charge, for scientific research and application development, access to Resourcesat-1(formerly IRS-P6) archive and Resourcesat-2 archive & new acqs data. These products are available as part of the GAF Indian Satellite Imagery products from the following sensors:

  • LISS-IV (Green, Red, NIR bands, 5.8m res.) - High res. multi-spectral
  • LISS-III (Green, Red, NIR and SWIR bands, 23/70m res.) - Linear Imaging Self Scanning medium res. multi-spectral
  • AWiFS (Green, Red, NIR and SWIR bands, 56/70m res.) - Advanced Wide Field Sensor coarse res., multi-spectral.

ESA is offering free of charge, for scientific research and application development, access to Cartosat-1 (formerly IRS-P5) archive data, as well as Euro-Maps 3D Digital Surface Model derived from Cartosat-1.

The products are available as part of the GAF Indian Satellite Imagery products from two panchromatic cameras,PAN-Aft and PAN-Fore (Panchromatic, 2.5m res.,30Km swath) onboard Cartosat-1, that take black-and-white stereoscopic pictures in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

ESA is offering free of charge,for scientific research and application development, access to:

ESA is offering a free online access to the scientific users community through the online dissemination server to the following Oceansat-2 data acquired in collaboration with GAF AG

  • Oceansat-2 Near Real Time data over Europe, Level 1B, 2B and 2C.

The access is granted immediately to all users worldwide after fast registration.


ESA is offering a free online access to users from ESA Member States and European Union Member States community through the online dissemination server to the following WorldView-2 data

  • European cities dataset - 40cm resolution / Optical Multi Spectral Radiometry High Resolution / level 3 .Coverage of the European most populated urban areas*. Collected during Feb. 2011 to Oct. 2013 - online access after authorization .

After registration authorized users will be enabled to download the products online without quota limitation.Please find details in the Terms of applicability.

ESA maintains an archive of Geo Ortho Kit IKONOS data previously requested through the TPM scheme. Acquired ,between 2000 and 2008, over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, this dataset is available online for direct download after fast registration.


ESA offers free of charge , for scientific research and application development, access to the following TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X collections:

ESA, in collaboration with MDA, is offering free access to RADARSAT-1&2 data for R&D,both archived and new acquisitions for the following modes:

  • ScanSAR Wide and Narrow (Single or Dual Pol)
  • Wide (Single or Dual Pol)
  • Fine (Single or Dual Pol)
  • Standard (Single or Dual Pol)
  • Extended High and Low (Single Pol)

ESA will support as many high-quality and innovative projects as possible within the quota limit available therefore only a limited amount of products can be made available to each project (In principle, no more than 20).This opportunity is open to European Principal Investigators (Europe28+Switzerland+Norway).
Since June 2019 ESA has simplified the procedure to apply for RADARSAT TPM data by including them to the Data Service request.

ESA is offering access all Proba-V products for research and development free of charge

  • Level 1C
  • Level 3 S1, S5 and S10 at 100, 333m and 1Km resolution

All level 1C (NRT), all 1Km products (NRT), and all 333m and 100m products (older than 1 month) can be downloaded immediately after registration to the catalogue .
All 333m and 100m in Near Real Time are also offered by ESA (free of charge) , the access is granted after ESA project proposal acceptance (proposal submission)

ESA is offering to PIs from Europe, Canada and Africa PlanetScope satellite constellation data for Research and Application development.
The constellation consists of multiple launches of groups of individual satellites (DOVEs). Therefore, on-orbit capacity is constantly improving in capability or quantity, with technology improvements deployed at a rapid pace. Each DOVE is a CubeSat 3U form factor (10 cm by 10 cm by 30 cm). The complete PlanetScope constellation of 120+ active satellites is able to image the entire Earth land surface every day (daily collection capacity of ~2M km²).

ESA offers (on demand, project proposal) the following product types - 3 band (RGB) or 4 bands (RGB,NIR) / 3.7m resolution:
  • Basic Scene: Level 1B Scaled Top of Atmosphere Radiance (at sensor) and sensor corrected products
  • Ortho Scene: Level 3B Orthorectified, scaled Top of Atmosphere Radiance (at sensor) or Surface Reflectance image products projected to a cartographic map

ESA is offering to PIs from Europe, Canada and Africa, RapidEye (RE) data for Research and Application development:

  • RapidEye ESA archive (online access, fast registration)
  • RapidEye full archive & Tasking Ortho Products:L3A orthorectified and geometric corrected products resampled at 5m spatial resolution (on demand, project proposal).

Quota for full archive and tasking are assigned as credits usable for archived or tasking (For details, including restrictions to the use refer the Terms of applicability)

ESA is offering to PIs from Europe, Canada and Africa SkySat satellite constellation data for Research and Application development. The SkySat constellation is the Very High Resolution component of Planet's satellite image portfolio and consists of 14 satellites with a daily collection capacity of 400K km²/day. All SkySats contain Cassegrain telescopes with a focal length of 3.6m, with three 5.5 megapixel CMOS imaging detectors making up the focal plane

ESA offers the following product types, archived and new acquisitions:
  • Basic scene: Level 2B uncalibrated and in a raw digital number products with no radiometric and geometric correction, 4 bands or PAN, <1m resolution
  • Ortho Scene: Level 3B sensor- and geometrically-corrected products projected to a cartographic map, 4 bands or 3 bands or PAN, <1m resolution
  • Ortho Collect scenes: Level 3B stripline products created by composing SkySat Ortho Scenes

ESA is offering a free and immediate access to the worldwide user community through the online dissemination server to to the following featured RapidEye datasets collected in collaboration with Planet Labs:

  • RapidEye Time series for Sentinel-2
    *Two time series collected in preparation to the exploitation of Sentinel-2, with a 5 day revisit at high resolution : Feb. to June 2013 over 14 selected sites and Apr. to Sept. 2015 over 10 selected sites around the world.

  • RapidEye South America.
    * A dataset of level 3A tiles covering more than 6 million km2 of South American countries: Paraguay, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Uruguay and Argentina

From August 2013 ESA is offering access to Landsat-8 products:

  • Systematic provision of all Landsat-8 data acquired over European station(s)
  • Near-real-time data provision within ± 3 hours after sensing
  • Online availability of all products
  • USGS certified ESA Landsat-8 (L1T and L1gT) products based on the USGS operational processing chain

Availability and restrictions on the use of the Landsat-8 data are described in the Terms and Conditions.

The following instruments are available:

  • The OLI (Operational Land Imager) sensor, which provides products of 30m resolution for VIS/NIR/SWIR, 15m resolution for PAN data,180km x 185 km, 9 spectral bands
  • The TIRS (Thermal Infrared Scanner) sensor, which provides an additional 2 TIR bands.

ESA is offering:

  • Pre-defined cloud-free European Coverages of TM and ETM+ data acquired between 1990 and 1995 (TM) and between 1999 and 2003 (ETM+). Available after (Fast registration and direct download for LANDSAT.TM.SCPSCC).
  • Newly processed Orthocorrected Landsat 5 TM data from 1984 to 2011 and Landsat 7 ETM from 1999 to 2003. Products unique to ESA, not in USGS archives. Available over Europe (incl. Greenland) and West Africa (Fast registration and direct download for LANDSAT.TM.GTC and LANDSAT.ETM.GTC).

ESA offers access to COSMO-SkyMed data for Research and Application development, both archived and new acquisitions, from the following 4 modes:

  • ScanSAR Huge
  • ScanSAR Wide
  • StripMap HIMAGE
  • StripMap PINGPONG

Only a limited amount of products can be made available to each project, geographical restrictions are applied based on PI country of residence. Only PIs from Europe, Canada, Africa and China (only if they participate in a Dragon 4 projects) are eligible for this ESA TPM.

The list of available data can be retrieved using the COSMO-SkyMed products catalogue (self registration required).

In addition ESA offers online access to COSMO-SkyMed ESA archive via Data Service request.

ESA is offering a free online access to the following ALOS datasets:

  • ALOS PALSAR PLR (Polarimetric 4 polarization)
  • ALOS PALSAR FBD (Fine Beam Double polarization)
  • ALOS PALSAR FBS (Fine Beam Single polarization)
  • ALOS Africa (AVNIR-2 OBS and PRISM OB1 L1B)

Note that ESA also plans to make ALOS PALSAR WB1 (ScanSAR Burst mode 1), PRISM and AVNIR-2 data available at a later stage.

Access is granted after fast registration. Note that PALSAR access requires further verification by ESA that the information provided by the PI is consistent with the service (More details on the ALOS PALSAR FAQ page).

An opportunity to access to GRACE Level-1B and Level-2 data is offered by ESA for scientific research and applications development, on the basis of an agreement with the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ).

Data are immediately available online through anonymous FTP via GFZ.

ESA is offering full Archive and new GOSAT (Greenhouse gases Observing Satellite) and (in continuation) GOSAT-2 JAXA missions data for Research and Application development. Access is immediate and free for online FTP download.

Both missions,designed to monitor the global distribution of CO2 and CH4 and the impacts of climate change and human activities on the carbon cycle, have the same two instruments on board (with enhance performance for GOSAT-2): TANSO-FTS (Thermal And Near infrared Sensor for carbon Observation-Fourier Transform Spectrometer) and CAI (Cloud and Aerosol Imager-2).
ESA distributes to users:
  • Standard GOSAT products (Nrt FTS L1X products,calibrated Level 1B products, and all higher level products based on the validated L1B and released to general users)
  • FTS-2 Common (day and night), SWIR (only day) and TIR (day and night) Level 1A and 1B data
  • CAI-2 Common, Forward and Backward Level 1A and 1B

ESA is offering a free online access to the EO community, to PROBA-1 CHRIS and HRC data. Archived data are available for both instruments, while new tasking is available only for CHRIS.

Archive data can be access immediately to all users after fast registration.

New acquisition requests has to be attached to a project proposal submission to ESA. The request outcome is provided after project proposal evaluation and feasibility analysis.

Access to MODIS Level 1b data acquired by European stations was provided by ESA for scientific research and applications development.

The following products are available for Research and Application development:

  • 1 European coverage (38 countries) acquired in 2007 from the satellites of the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC)

The Level1 data provided in this collection originate from the various DMC satellites Beijing-1, UK-DMC and Nigeria Sat-1 SLIM6 instrument (with 32m spatial resolution) with 3 spectral bands. The swath is up to about 600 km. In addition to the Level 1, the collection provides the same data geometrically corrected.

The following products are available for Research and Application development:

  • 2 European coverages acquired in the years 2005-2006-2007 from the SPOT 4,
    SPOT 5 and IRS-P6 satellites (online)

Availability and restrictions to the use of the above data is described in the Terms of applicability for the SPOT online archive.

The Level1 data provided in this collection originate from the SPOT 4 HRVIR instrument (with 20m spatial resolution), from SPOT 5 HRG (with 10m spatial resolution resampled to 20m) and IRS-P6 LISS III (with 23m spatial resolution), each with four spectral bands. The swath is of about 60 km for the Spot satellites and 140 km for the IRS-P6 satellite. In addition to the Level 1, the collection provides the same data geometrically corrected towards a European Map Projection with 25m resolution.

Access to a limited amount of free of charge data to be acquired by the Linear Imaging Self-Scanning Sensor-4 (LISS-4), Linear Imaging Self-Scanning Sensor-3 (LISS-3) and Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS) onboard ISRO's IRS-P6 (Resourcesat-1) can be provided by ESA to European users. The overall aim of this call is to evaluate/explore scientific requirements in the future for this type of data.

LISS-4 provides VIS imagery at 5/6 m spatial resolution (swath ranging from 24 to 70 Km).
LISS-3 provides VIS/SWIR imagery at 23/24 m spatial resolution (swath = 141 km).
AWiFS provides VIS/SWIR imagery at 56/70 m spatial resolution (swath = 740 km).

The deadline for proposal submission is June 14th, 2006; notification of proposal acceptance will be sent within the following 3 months; IRS-P6 data ordering shall be completed within three months from proposal acceptance.

The European Space Agency gives access to the TropForest dataset, free of charge to
EU Member States, Norway and Switzerland.

Such dataset results from the homonymous ESA Data User Element (DUE) project.The DUE is a programmatic component of the Earth Observation Envelope Programme (EOEP).
The TropForest project aimed to create an harmonized geo-database of ortho-rectified and pre-processed imagery based on satellite data acquisitions from High Resolution optical sensors (ALOS AVNIR-2, DEIMOS-1 SLIM6, KOMPSAT-2 MSC) performed during the years 2009 to 2011, for the Tropical Latin America (excluding Mexico) and for the Tropical South and Southeast Asia (excluding China), resulting in 1971 sites located at 1° x 1° geographical latitude/longitude intersections. The dataset available covers 1866 sites (94.7% of target sites).

The European Space Agency gives access to the complete SEASAT dataset acquired by ESA,free of charge to the worldwide user community. The dataset comprises some of the first ever SAR data recorded for scientific purposes, reprocessed with the most recent processor. This SEASAT dataset is now available to the user community for the first time and still holds unexamined value, as only few data were digitally processed in the past.

This SEASAT imagery provides a unique coverage, particularly over Europe. It is available at the following processing levels:

  • SAR Precision Image (SEA_PRI_1P)
  • SAR Single Look Complex Image Product (SEA_SLC_1P)
  • SAR Ellipsoid Geocoded Precision Image (SEA_GEC_1P)

The European Space Agency gives access for Research and Application development to the Kompsat-2 ESA dataset ,free of charge to the worldwide user community. The dataset comprises acquisitions from 2007 to 2011.

The MSC sensor (Multispectral camera) onboard KOMPSAT-2 provides data at 1 m spatial resolution (Panchromatic mode -1 band) and 4 m spatial resolution (Multispectral mode 4 bands). The swath is of about 15 km.

Access to a pre-defined collection of uncalibrated data acquired by the Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) onboard KARI's Kompsat-1 satellite and covering around 50 European cities can be provided by ESA.

EOC provides panchromatic imagery at 6/7 m spatial resolution, with a swath of 17 km.

The list of available data can be retrieved using the EOLI Catalogues.


Since June 2007 ESA has an agreement in place to distribute data acquired by the ODIN satellite. Access to ODIN (SMR and OSIRIS) validated Level1 and Level 2 data may be provided by ESA to worldwide Principal Investigators for scientific research and applications development.


Data acquired by ESA since 1998 in visibility of Matera (Italy), Maspalomas (Spain) and Tromso (Norway) receiving stations by the SeaWiFS sensor onboard Orbview-2 (SeaStar) can be provided to Cat-1 users.

Data are offered at reproduction cost; projects can comprise a maximum of 1 PI + 3 Co-PIs.

SeaWiFS provides multispectral data at 1 Km spatial resolution.
Archived data can be identified using the EOLI Catalogues

OrbView-2 / SeaWiFS acquisitions stopped definitely in February 2011

During 2011 ESA offered the following FORMOSAT-2 data for Research and Application development:

  • Bundle Level 1A / 2A ( 24 x 24 km at Nadir)
    2m B&W + 8m MS
    (on demand,acquisition and production)

  • Availability and restrictions to the use of the above data is described in the Terms of applicability for the FORMOSAT-2 on demand products

    FORMOSAT-2 is an NSPO (National Space Program Office) of Taiwan Earth imaging satellite with the objective to collect high-resolution panchromatic (2 m) and multispectral (8 m) imagery for a great variety of applications (land,agriculture and forestry, environmental monitoring, natural disaster evaluation,support of research interests).

    Onboard Sensors:
    RSI (Remote Sensing Instrument)

Initiated under the International Polar Year (IPY), ESA is offering a free online access through the online dissamination server to ALOS IPY Antarctica collection.
The following products are available for Research and Application development:

  • ALOS PALSAR ScanSAR (WB1) around 5000 processed products in 100m spatial resolution (L1.5),
  • Temporal coverage:
    from July (cycle 21) to December 2008 (beginning of cycle 24)
    from May 2009 (cycle 27) to March 2010.

Missing products between the two periods above is due to L0 data over Antarctica not available in ADEN archives and then not processed to L1.
Note that ALOS IPY access is granted after fast registration (link below) and ESA verification that the information provided by the PI is consistent with the service.
