  CLARE 98 - Cloud Lidar and Radar Experiment

  The proceedings from the CLARE International Workshop, which took place at ESTEC in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, from 13 to 14 September 1999, are presented here. The objective of the 1998 CLARE campaign was to collect and analyse radar and lidar as well as in-situ data to support the development of retrieval algorithms and to consolidate the scientific requirements of the future Earth Radiation Mission.

  The data products supplied by DMCII are derived from images acquired by the DMC satellites. The primary payload on the DMC satellites is the SLIM-6 imager manufactured by SSTL, UK. This manual will aid users in their analysis of the data products to maximise the information they can extract from the DMC images by providing a thorough description of the data products, the imaging payload, the calibration procedure and the orthorectification process.

  The worksheets in this pack are intended to familiarise pupils between the ages of 11 and 14 with the subject of satellite imagery. Satellite images are of increasing importance in a great many domains and are dramatically changing the way we view the world and perceive physical phenomena. Both literally and figuratively, they add a new dimension to our knowledge, whether it be in the study of natural phenomena or in assisting humans in their various activities. Their use -- and understanding -- by pupils is one of the aims of this project.

Candidate model payload groupings (both an initial set and an evolutionary growth) have been derived assuming the availability of serviceable permanent polar platforms, e.g. a "morning" platform provided by ESA, and an 11 afternoon" one by NASA.
