About COSMO-SkyMed Series
COSMO-SkyMed (COnstellation of small Satellites for the Mediterranean basin Observation) Series is owned and operated by ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana) and is funded by the Italian Ministry of Research and the Italian Ministry of Defense.
The series consists of two generations, each a constellation of several satellites. The first generation consisted of four identical satellites launched between 2007 and 2010 - all of which are still operational. The second generation will consist of two enhanced SAR satellites, the first of which was launched in 2019 and the second is planned to be launched in 2021.
The objective of the COSMO-SkyMed series is to provide global Earth observation that can be repeated several times a day in all-weather conditions. The imagery obtained can be used for the sake of emergency prevention, strategy, scientific and commercial purposes, providing data on a global scale to support a variety of applications including risk management, cartography, forest & environment protection, natural resources exploration, land management, defense and security, maritime surveillance, food & agriculture management.
For scientific research and application development (both archived and new acquisitions), the COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation data are available for free following the approval of a project proposal. ESA will support as many high-quality and innovative projects as possible within the quota limit available, therefore only a limited amount of products can be made available to each project.
