MERIS primary products like remote sensing reflectance and aerosol optical thickness data, are assessed using in situ data collected at the Acqua Alta Oceanographic Tower in the northern Adriatic Sea. The in situ data used for the assessment were collected with an autonomous above water radiometer from April 2002 to March 2005. The study presents and discusses the accuracy of MERIS primary products in the 412-670 nm spectral region. The analysis is restricted to satellite and in situ data taken within 1 hour difference to minimize the effects of the spatial and temporal non-homogeneity of atmosphere and sea around the measurement site mostly characterized by continental aerosols and both Case-1 and Case-2 waters.
