Validation of (A)ATSR sea surface temperature observations

Three full years of top of atmosphere brightness temperatures and skin sea
surface temperatures (SSTs) from the Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) on ENVISAT have now been collected at the Met Office at 10 arc minute spatial resolution. Various processing have been performed on these data to convert from skin to sub-skin (bulk) SST and to model and recognise diurnal warming effects in these observations. Validation results of comparisons of AATSR skin and bulk SSTs against in situ SST observations, with other satellite SSTs, and with gridded climate SST datasets will be presented. The results show that that AATSR performs well within the 0.3K accuracy for which it was originally designed. Global SST anomaly time series will also be presented, using additional ATSR-1 and
ATSR-2 data back to 1991, to examine global SST anomaly trends over the last 15 years.
