The 6th SMOS Science Workshop

15-May - 17-May 2006

Lingby, Denmark

The 6th SMOS Workshop took place from 15-17 May 2006 at the Technical University of Denmark, Lingby, DK.

ESA's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission has been designed to observe soil moisture over the Earth's land masses and salinity over the oceans. Soil moisture data are urgently required for hydrological studies and data on ocean salinity are vital for improving our understanding of ocean circulation patterns.

Launched in 2009, SMOS is the second Earth Explorer mission to be developed as part of ESA's Living Planet Programme.

The goals of the 6th SMOS Workshop were:
  1. To give an update on the status of the different projects relevant to the SMOS mission,
  2. To give an overview of what was planned for the ground segment including the SMOS retrievals and products. Core Cal/Val activities were outlined,
  3. To open a forum for discussion on the results and potential improvement to what was scheduled to optimise science return,
  4. To stimulate co-ordination with similar efforts performed around the Aquarius/SMOS project or other projects.

The aims of the Workshop, open to SMOS Cal/Val AO PIs and their co-investigators and all scientists interested in the mission, was to present the status of ongoing projects, to provide the latest information about Cal/Val activities - including ground segment and products, to analyse achieved results and potential improvements; overall to stimulate co-ordination among current projects and initiatives.
