Abstract
This paper demonstrates the important contribution that remote sensing
can make to coastal zone monitoring. Coastal processes operate across spatial
scales ranging from local to regional, and with temporal scales ranging
from diurnal to long term. Extensive use of sensor data fusion and multi-resolution
analysis are essential to derive the full benefit from available data sources
and to characterise fully the properties of the observed scene.
For coastal applications, remote sensing has primarily been used in
a qualitative or descriptive way. The particular focus for this study is
on approaches to quantitative modelling as instrument capabilities move
towards the operational use of data, with particular emphasis on ESA ERS
missions.
Five potential case studies have been analyzed in depth, and for each
case, the potential data sources and modelling approaches have been prioritized.
The study areas are the North Sea and Mediterranean coastal areas (North
Ionian Sea) that are both of strategic economic and environmental importance
to Europe.
The case studies analyzed cover the most important applications for
coastal zone monitoring lincluding the evolution of sea bed topography,
the current variability in coastal waters due to density gradients, the
sea temperature variation with particular regard to discrimination between
anthropogenic and natural effects on temperature distribution, the identification
of areas subject to eutrophication that could be related to overheated
and polluted water diffusion, and monitoring of oil spills and the diffusion
of oil films.
The most suitable data and models for each case have been selected.
The study is being performed under ESA/ESTEC
contract number 11972/96/NL/CN.
