Abstract

Pilot demonstrations of environmental information retrieval from the ERS sensors for monitoring of the St. Petersburg region is a multi-disciplinary research project with a wide scientific scope covering several disciplines. The current activities to be reported covers:

  • Studies of forest degradation at the Estonian border using ERS SAR and optical earth observation data (ATSR, AVHRR and Landsat TM)
  • Mapping of water circulation and sea ice distribution at large lakes using ERS SAR and field survey data from august 1995 and the 1995 winter season
  • Oil pollution mapping using geographical information on terrestrial deposits and pollution leackages integrated with satellite earth observation data from the ERS SAR and Landsat TM
  • Mapping of atmospheric ozone in the western part of Russia using the GOME sensor and atmospheric measurements from sounding stations.

The results achieved within the project are applicable for environmental monitoring of land, lakes and waters, atmospheric monitoring, hazard assessment, and surface change detection.
