Online Access to Radar Maritime Monitoring Data

ScanEx Center and Shirshov Institute of Oceanology have completed the contract on radar oil spills monitoring in the northern part of the Caspian Sea, ordered by Lukoil company in 2007.
The source data for radar imagery are RADARSAT-1 and ENVISAT-1 radar satellites that deliver their images to the Moscow reception and processing station of ScanEx RDC. Radar data operational processing, oil spills detection and analysis technology and procedure have been successfully worked out.
Results of the radar images thematic processing in form of GIS layers are available now via the geoportal with on-line service and a free access at http://www.scanex.ru/en/company/default.asp?submenu=about&id=project4
Results of the first year of oil pollution monitoring in the northern part of the Caspian Sea have been summed up, revealing that the main source of the water area contamination in this region are ship wastes and polluted river runoffs.
