Use of SAR data for ships positioning control: a two-year study

The results of a two-year study of ship manifestation in SAR images and ship positioning control experience using SAR data are presented. The impact of such factors as viewing angle, polarization, and hydrometeorological parameters on ship manifestation in SAR images were examined. Optimal combination of these factors for the purpose of ship detection is suggested. Specifics of using cross-polarization data are discussed. Jointly with the National Center for Monitoring and Communications and its Kamchtka division, experiments were conducted to verify the obtained results and study the feasibility of using SAR data in the systems of fishering ships geographic positioning control. The focus was on the development of an operational technology to detect ships’ positioning fraud based on ENVISAT ASAR data of a resolution of 12,5 m and 75 m. A prototype automated technique is described allowing for the integration of SAR data into the existing industrial monitoring system. Prospects of the elaboration of an integrated and fully automated ship positioning control system are discussed.
