Analysis of Effects of Environmental Factors on Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Ice in Liaodong Bay with Envisat ASAR and MODIS Imagery

Abstract

The temporal and spatial variability of the ice in Liaodong bay is quite different from the ice in the Polar Regions and high-latitude regions. The spatio-temporal distribution of ice in Liaodong bay is prominently influenced by the environmental factors, such as temperature, wind, topography, tide, and salinity. In this paper, the effects of environmental factors on ice spatio-temporal distribution were analyzed by using long-time series of ENVISAT ASAR, MODIS imagery and meteorological data obtained from marine coastal weather stations near Liaodong Bay. Analysis results showed that the ice area in Liaodong bay is less sensitive to temperature and wind field in serious ice period. But the change of temperature can cause remarkable changes of the ice area during the melting period. Wind field affects the changing speed of the ice area and the distribution of ice edge. The tide can make the whole regional ice drift several kilometers in short time at the speed of 0.5m/s, but it can't make effects on the area of sea ice. The salinity, topography and precipitation will also influence the change of the sea ice area and edge to some extent.
