Recent improvements for the assimilation of upgraded ASAR wave spectra in the wave model

Abstract

The assimilation system using the ASAR wave spectra has been set to the operational use. Longer period of assimilation is needed for validation and improvements of the assimilation scheme. In our previous work, the same correlation model has been used to spread the correction of mean wave parameters for each dominant wave train. By performing some test runs with wave model WAM cycle 4, it is shown that the spread of incremental analysis is specific for each wave parameter, for instance the wave energy or the wave number components. This work is focusing on implementing two different correlation models for the optimal interpolation of wave energy and wave number components of dominant wave trains. The assimilation of the upgraded ASAR level 2 wave mode products are performed for a period of one year. We also disscussed the dependency of the correlation length with the ocean basins. Other test runs have been performed in order to assess the impact of assimilating very long waves detected by the ASAR during a day at the same locations. Better grid resolution of the wave model is also investigated

The results reveals improvements on the impact of the assimilation system. The outputs of integrated waves parameters from the runs have been validated with indpendent wave observations such altimeters Jason-1 and GFO-NOAA, and buoys data. Conclusions and discussions will be commented in the final paper.
